Venezuela is located in northern South America with diverse geography including mountain ranges, plains, and rainforests. The population of around 26 million is predominantly urban and Roman Catholic. Venezuela has a three-branch government led by President Hugo Chavez and the United Socialist Party of Venezuela. However, the government has increasingly consolidated power and restricted freedoms while corruption is rampant. The economy relies heavily on oil exports which account for around 80% of GDP.
