Manu Claeys van stRaten-generaal presenteert op de 14de Horta infoavond van de Antwerpse actiegroepen de bouwstenen voor een plan B, een leefbare mobiliteitsoplossing voor Antwerpen met draagvlak. Dit bestaat uit Ringland, en dit overal waar veel mensen wonen en wordt versterkt met volledig ingetunnelde tangenten voor maximale ontsluiting van de haven en omleiding van internationaal verkeer. Deze onderdelen waar nooit draagvlak voor is geweest - de R11Bis en het BAM tracé - kunnen best zo snel mogelijk verlaten worden, in plaats van over 5 jaar. En het BAM als ondemocratisch en duur struikelblok moet zo snel mogelijk ontbonden worden. Dit is het tweede deel van zijn presentatie. Het eerste deel behandelde de ingrijpende politieke beïnvloeding van het MER Oosterweel waardoor het document niet meer wetenschappelijk toetsbaar is en geen juridisch - laat staan maatschappelijk - draagvlak meer heeft.

Woensdag 5 maart organiseerden stRaten-generaal en Ademloos voor de 13de keer een infoavond. Het werd een overrompeling. Nog nooit kwam zo veel volk opdagen. Zaal Horta zat stampvol, er waren ruim zeshonderd mensen, meer dan bij de infoavond vlak voor de volksraadpleging.
Wie denkt dat het verzet in Antwerpen tegen het BAM-tracé gebroken is, vergist zich. We zagen zelden een combattievere groep mensen. Het was hartverwarmend voor de actiegroepen die al bijna negen (stRaten-generaal) en zes jaar (Ademloos) ijveren voor een duurzame, toekomstgerichte, gezonde mobiliteitsoplossing voor Antwerpen.
De wetstraatpers heeft het misschien niet in de gaten, maar de Antwerpse actiegroepen wel: de afkeer van het BAM-tracé in Antwerpen is en blijft groot. Je bouwt simpelweg geen autostrade door een stad. Dat was op 18 oktober 2009 ook de boodschap na een volksraadpleging over het BAM-tracé.
Tweede vaststelling van de avond: het verzet tegen het BAM-tracé bedt zich vandaag stilaan in een bredere beweging in, die van stedelingen die in een 21ste-eeuwse stad willen wonen. En daar hoort een nieuwe autostrade door de stad niet bij. Wel het creëren van open en groene ruimte, van een overkapping (cfr. het nieuwe initiatief Ringland), van mobiliteitsalternatieven, van intelligente sturingssystemen voor doorgaand verkeer, van woonwijken waar de leefkwaliteit hoog is (geen overdaad aan lawaai, geen wolk van fijn stof), van een politiek ook die niet ‘over de hoofden heen’ beslist.
Er zijn veel mensen die bewust voor het wonen in de stad kiezen, ‘want daar gebeurt het’. Die mensen vinden dat ze ook recht hebben op een kwaliteitsvolle leefomgeving, en daar willen ze werk van maken. Het zijn die mensen die we gisteravond terugvonden in zaal Horta. Samen vormen ze een beweging.
Voor meer en meer Antwerpenaren gaat het niet eens om het technische debat over tracés, tolheffingssystemen of cijfertabellen, wel om het aanvoelen dat Antwerpen niet de historische fout mag begaan om zich met het permanente aanzuigen van grote verkeersvolumes dwars door de stad te verankeren in een vorige eeuw. De nieuwe beweging kijkt naar steden als Kopenhagen, Stockholm, Hamburg, Wenen, steden waar men wel de knop heeft omgedraaid en resoluut de 21ste eeuw is binnengestapt. Steden ook die in de jaarlijkse rapporten van ‘most liveable cities’ bovenaan prijken. Belgische steden als Brussel, Antwerpen of Luik prijken steevast onderaan de lijst.
De kern van het debat verlegt zich naar de vraag hoe een duurzame stad van de 21ste eeuw er uitziet. En dat is niet met een open autostradesleuf van 19 baanvakken tussen dichtbevolkte wijken, zoals het BAM-tracé er uitziet aan het Antwerpse Sportpaleis. Wie tijdens city-trips vol bewondering nieuwe stadsontwikkelingsprojecten bezoekt in het buitenland, die gaat niet naar zo’n sleuf kijken waar je om gezondheidsredenen beter wegblijft, wel naar stadsgebieden waar je zelf ook wel zou willen wonen.

Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
