Valvular heart disease can be congenital or acquired and causes deformities of the heart valves. Rheumatic heart disease is a common cause of acquired valvular disease. The valves on the left side of the heart, especially the mitral valve, are more frequently affected than those on the right side. The aortic valve is the second most commonly involved valve.
