Great Things Happen When We LIVE UNITED.
Kim Perry, Co-chair, 2014 CampaignEric Luftig, Co-chair, Tocqueville Society Advisory Cabinet
When you give through United Way, you are guaranteed experience and accountability. Together we invest in
61 high quality, results-oriented initiatives from 112 local agencies who work together to address complex
challenges in a way that no single agency can.
MEASURABLE AND LASTING IMPACT
By targeting root causes of issues in EDUCATION, FOOD ACCESS, and
HEALTHY AGING, we are on track to:
• Increase the number of third grade students reading at grade level by
50% — changing the lives of 80,000 children
• Reduce the number of people who are food insecure by 50% —
ensuring 40,000 people have nutritious food accessible at all times
• Increase the number of older adults whose basic needs are met at home
by 50% — keeping 8,000 seniors safe and healthy in their own homes
As always, we also continue to fund vital EMERGENCY SERVICES such as
disaster relief, shelters and rape crisis support.
Together We Achieve More.

DEEP ROOTS GROUNDED
IN THE SPIRIT OF GIVING
The United Way Tocqueville Society
was founded in 1984 to deepen the
understanding and support of our
most generous and community-minded
investors. The name and coat of arms,
the fleur-de-lis, symbolize our deep
commitment to volunteerism.
Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 - 1859) was
a French political thinker and historian
who traveled extensively recording his
observations. Three elements which he
admired in North American society were
liberty, equality and the spirit of neighbor
helping neighbor. Democracy in America
(1835), his major work, is considered
an early masterpiece of sociology and
political science.
Our Greater Lehigh Valley Tocqueville
Society was founded in 1989. Today
there are nearly 400 Tocqueville
Societies throughout the world which
have collectively raised over $514
million dollars from more than 25,000
individuals.
GIVING OPTIONS
TAX-WISE GIVING
A charitable contribution of
appreciated securities—including
stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds—
is one of the most tax-efficient of all
ways to give. Appreciated securities
with unrealized gains may be donated
and a tax deduction taken for the full
fair market value—up to 30% of the
donor’s adjusted gross income.
CASH VS. STOCK: BENEFITS OF A $10,000 GIFT OF STOCK*
CASH GIFT STOCK GIFT
Current fair market value $ 10,000 $ 10,000
Income tax saved $ 3,960 $ 3,960
Capital gains tax saved (long term) $ 0 $ 2,000
Medicare contribution tax saved $ 0 $ 380
Net cost of gift $ 6,040 $ 3,660
* Assumes “0” basis and donor in a top tax bracket;
actual savings depend on donor circumstances
For information on any aspect of
giving to United Way, contact:

jamesg@unitedwayglv.org
United Way of Greater Lehigh Valley
is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
and your donation is tax deductible as
allowed by current federal and state
tax law.
LEGACY GIVING
Legacy commitments, when coupled with annual giving, help change lives today and tomorrow.
Please sustain our future impact by including United Way in your estate plans.
