The coronavirus outbreak in the Philippines has had a major impact on jeepney drivers, with thousands left jobless after public transport was barred under lockdown measures. Many drivers have resorted to begging in the streets, displaying signs asking for money and food, while around 35 drivers in one village turned their jeepneys into makeshift shelters to live in with their families due to having no other home and no income. The jeepney drivers hope they will be able to work again as the iconic vehicles, which have long been a symbol of Philippine culture and transport, remain sidelined even as other vehicles return to the roads.
