Maricopa County in Arizona has a high tuberculosis (TB) morbidity rate, accounting for 50% of reported cases in the state. In 2009, the county developed an integrated TB case management model to improve outcomes. This model partnered epidemiologists and nurse case managers to conduct clinical services and contact investigation. After implementing this model, the county exceeded national targets for initial treatment and determining HIV status. The percentage completing treatment increased significantly. However, further changes are needed to improve contact elicitation and evaluation by addressing psychosocial and cultural factors influencing testing. This integrated model resulted in improved outcomes and may be suitable for other high TB areas with similar resources.
