This document discusses strategies for optimizing memory acquisition based on current brain research. It explains that learning begins with attention, and input not attended to cannot become memory. The brain's reticular activating system acts as an involuntary filter that prioritizes novelty, perceived threats, and curiosity over other sensory input. Teachers can draw and sustain student attention through cues that promote curiosity and the ability to make accurate predictions. When students can correctly predict outcomes, it increases dopamine release and the pleasure response in the brain, reinforcing memory networks. The document provides strategies for reducing stress and promoting a growth mindset in students, including setting meaningful goals and providing frequent, incremental feedback. It emphasizes the importance of pattern-matching and activating prior knowledge to successfully encode

Yoga nidra, or "yogic sleep", is a mindfulness practice that involves guided relaxation and awareness of bodily sensations. It aims to reduce stress and increase well-being and performance. The document discusses how yoga nidra cultivates mindfulness by focusing attention on the breath and alternating awareness between different parts of the body. Research shows it can decrease stress symptoms and increase skills like attention regulation. A typical yoga nidra session involves settling the body, focused breathing, mental resolutions, and guided awareness practices. It is said to activate the prefrontal cortex and reduce stress in the limbic system by descripting emotions symbolically.

This document summarizes a bio-psycho-social assessment of Doc Wayne, a non-profit organization that uses sports to help at-risk youth. It evaluated 53 youth participants using self-reports, computerized games, and physiological measurements. Results found improvements in emotion regulation, social cognition, and stress levels compared to controls, with larger effects for multi-season participants. While some outcomes improved quickly, others emerged more slowly. The effect sizes were consistent with individual psychotherapies. The assessment concluded that sports can serve as an effective therapeutic intervention for youth.
This document discusses ideas and better worlds. It encourages the reader to draw and describe their idea of a better world using their senses and emotions. It then prompts sharing the idea with three people and how to respond if the idea is not liked. It also includes brief summaries of the brain, heart, gut, and genetics as well as applying insights to habits and brain states.

The document discusses key topics in infant development covered in a developmental psychology course, including motor development, brain growth, sleep patterns, and nutrition. It provides details on important milestones like the disappearance of reflexes between birth and age two. Cultural and environmental factors that can influence domains like motor skills and sleep are also addressed. Synaptic pruning in the first two years helps establish stronger neural connections by reducing unnecessary neurons. While brain development is genetically programmed, the environment can impact it through plasticity during sensitive periods.
Incorporating Adolescent Brain Development Research into Youth Programming National Safe Place
This webinar will review adolescent brain development research and provide tips for practical application in youth programming. During the webinar, we will provide an overview of how the teen brain functions and outline ways in which adults can structure opportunities and interactions that will encourage cognitive development, help youth recognize risks and opportunities and minimize factors that inhibit brain development.
The prefrontal cortex: What is it? Its functions, Its dysfunctions and some e...hermosadory
The prefrontal cortex is located in the front part of the brain's frontal lobe. It regulates both short-term and long-term decision making, creates strategies, adjusts actions in changing situations, and controls emotions and impulses. Dysfunction in this area has been linked to disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and ADHD. One study found that having subjects memorize a 7-digit number versus a 2-digit number reduced their self-control when choosing a snack. Two other studies investigated the prefrontal cortex's role in conscious monitoring and spatial working memory precision.
This document discusses how the brain learns best from a neurological perspective. It notes that digital technology is changing brain structure and that neuroplasticity allows the brain to adapt based on use. It provides guidelines for instruction including creating meaningful learning experiences, incorporating different sensory pathways, allowing for attention spans of 10-20 minutes, incorporating social and active learning, and reflecting on learning. It emphasizes the importance of sleep, nutrition, exercise and learning throughout life. Overall it aims to provide research-based strategies to create brain-compatible classrooms.
Have you ever wondered how to become smarter, or even "Can you become smarter?" Science has studied that question. Here are tips you can use starting today. Scientific sources are included.
The document provides an overview of key concepts about the brain and learning from multiple chapters. It discusses basic brain anatomy, how the brain changes over time through growth and pruning of cells, and how the left and right hemispheres process information differently. It also outlines factors that affect learning such as emotions, stress, physical environments, social interactions, and motivation. Practical strategies are suggested for teachers to optimize learning based on brain research findings.
The document discusses several topics in developmental psychology related to infancy, including:
- Motor development in infants, including the appearance and disappearance of reflexes between birth and 2 years.
- Brain development in the first 2 years, including growth of neurons and connections followed by synaptic pruning.
- Sleep patterns in infants, which are initially irregular and in short spurts compared to adults' consolidated nighttime sleep.
- Nutrition's role in fueling motor development and the impacts of malnutrition on physical and cognitive development.
Neuromyths are commonly held beliefs about the brain that have been shown to be untrue or misleading. Some examples include the ideas that we only use 10% of our brain, that listening to classical music makes you smarter, and that learning styles like VAK are scientifically valid. While early childhood experiences are important for brain development, their impact on later success is due more to social factors than critical periods in brain development. Factors like diet, exercise, and hydration can impact cognition, but many proposed links between them and academic or behavioral outcomes have little scientific evidence. The brain remains plastic and able to form new connections throughout life.
Spirituality involves self-discovery, questioning beliefs, and feeling connectedness. It can provide benefits like purpose, passion, and health. Studies show specific brain areas may induce or limit spiritual feelings. Damage to the left inferior parietal lobe or right angular gyrus can increase spirituality. Meditation and prayer may positively impact aging brains through improved cognition, mood, and mental health. However, negative impacts are possible from distractions, anxiety, or conflicts with existing beliefs.
