The document summarizes an upcoming event on urban sustainability to be held on October 8th in Arlington, Virginia. The event will explore how green infrastructure like parks, trees, and green roofs can help communities address climate change impacts. It will be hosted by Virginia Tech's Center for Leadership in Global Sustainability and co-hosted by Arlington Green and the International Society of Sustainability Professionals. There will be speakers on expanding green infrastructure and planning parks/open spaces, as well as a networking reception and dance performance.
Sustainable sites Initiative - The Future of sustainability 05312018 finalTony Green
The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) created the Leadership in Energy and Environmental and Design (LEED) accreditation in the year 2000 as a blueprint for the certification for sustainable construction. The program was an excellent roadmap but upon further review the fact only commercial properties were addressed can be considered restrictive. Do we live in commercial buildings (except for high rise apartments) and would we want to spend all our waking hours there? The Sustainable Site Initiative (SSI) created its certification program (SITES) in 2007 after recognizing LEED fell short on:
1. creating projects with sustainable landscape,
2. promoting sites which were designed with regenerative landscaping, and
3. focusing on human well-being of the occupants of its buildings.
SITES certified buildings sequester carbon, clean the air and water, increase energy efficiency, restore habitats, and ultimately gives back through significant economic, social, and environmental benefits
Presentation at the 2013 National Audubon conference mmega023
A presentation about neighborhoods and urban forest protection in the Seattle area. This presentation highlights many aspects of the urban forest and neighborhood livability, culminating with a brief overview of an innovative project we branded "tree census," where neighbors can walk their neighborhood and record vital information about trees along their streets and in their backyards. The goal is to have a tree census for the entire City of Seattle online.

Smart Cities Case Study Webinar: Chula VistaBlack & Veatch
The City of Chula Vista, California, has set aggressive goals to become more efficient through intelligent systems that support improved use of energy, water, communications and other critical infrastructure.
In this October 26, 2015, presentation, Gary Halbert, City Manager, City of Chula Vista; Eric Crockett, Director, City of Chula Vista; and Mike Bossom, Solution Lead, Black & Veatch Smart Integrated Infrastructure, explain how Chula Vista is creating a Smart City Roadmap that will move plans from paper to progress. The important steps they're taking can apply to other Smart City pursuits.
For more info about Smart Cities and Communities, email SII@bv.com or visit http://bit.ly/BVSII.
In this project, we sought to connect people to nature, promote equitable transportation (including access to multi-use trails, light rail, heavy rail, and blueways), preserve housing affordability, and establish a Lindbergh neighborhood identity through place-making.

Urban Sustainability Social Media Plan October 8, 2015
Event Summary and Positioning:
Summary
We will explore how planning for and expanding green infrastructure, such as parks, open
space, street trees, planting by homeowners, and green roofs, can help communities address
and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Our September event focused on Smart Cities and
building structures and this event will go a step further on the personal space level. Urban
Sustainability is being sponsored by Virginia Tech’s Center for Leadership in Global
Sustainability (CLiGS). We will also partner as a co-host, along with Arlington Green, and the
International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP). The event will be held on Thursday,
October 8, from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., followed by a Networking reception which includes a
cash bar and light hors d’oeuvres. A dance performance by the Bowen Dance Company will
take place following the networking reception.
Positioning
The event will focus on the following topics:
Expanding green infrastructure
How to plan for parks, open spaces and green communities
How community leaders interact with homeowners
Using the MapIt Tool for crowd sourcing
COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES
Messaging
The messaging will all focus on this one event. Messages will be imbedded in the details
surroundings speakers, location, companies, discussion topics, blog articles and related articles
to this event.
The session will:
Describe the County’s built and natural environments.
Demonstrate how to assess and quantify the benefits that could accrue from enhancing
the County’s green infrastructure, in particular its urban tree canopy.
Include a group discussion, using decision-support tools, on how leadership, innovation,
and negotiation skills can enable local leaders to engage stakeholders, develop and
implement a comprehensive response to climate change that works for their community.
