In Feb 2015 I visited an exhibition in London's Somerset House entitled 'Mapping the city'. I found it inspiring, so prepared a short presentation for my colleagues at HERE.com, however this is relevant for anyone interested in design, maps and street art.
Approved by Pablo invited 50 international street artists to present a series of ‘cartographic’ representations of their chosen cities. Ranging from literal to highly abstract, each map was a response to the way these artists experienced and interpreted the places that they know so well.
The call for submissions consisted of three words ‘Map your space’, and this presentation shows how some of the artists responded.

BAZ-ART IS AN ORGANISATION THAT TRANSFORM SPACES THROUGH
COMMISSIONED URBAN ART.
We achieve our objectives through the creation, education, incorporation and
development of art into all areas of South African life. Our aim is to harness the power
and creativity of art to improve people’s lives in many different ways.
From locally and internationally based artists, designers, teachers, jurists, community
leaders, event organisers and media specialists, Baz-Art provides a safe and qualitative
expertise and backing to its assignments.
Art education has been shown to have various positive academic, cognitive, personal,
social and civil benefits. Art activities can foster a sense of community. They can help to
create a place of safety and security where students can learn from one another as
they engage with themselves and their environment.
Art can also activate and enhance other skills as diverse as reading proficiency, verbal
memory, language and leadership. Art gives children a chance to use their
imagination, which is especially helpful in situations where resources are limited.
It helps children become more flexible as well as to think abstractly, qualities that assist
in problem solving and reasoning. Art also catalyse s personal emotional development
by teaching one to challenge assumptions.
But above all, Art is a bridge across Cultural differences by teaching disciplines,
acceptance, engagement, the value of efforts, of interacting in a social environment, of
tolerance and pride to the children, leveling all social disparities.

The pilot project for this partnership will be
launched in Salt River, Cape Town from the 7th to
16th of February, 2020 and will see the creation of
a safe space, where children can learn, sharpen
their gardening and art skills, while also producing
food for their families.
The construction and design of the garden will be
a collaborative effort between local children from
the community as well as local and international
artists who will be participating in the
International Public Art Festival (IPAF). This event
will also be hosted by Baz-Art in Salt River, Cape
Town from the 12th to 16th of February.
Baz-Art´s manager, Alexandre Tilmans' says ‘the
purpose of the project is to encourage and enable
young people to become productive members of
society. Furthermore, the garden will have many
other benefits, including creating a healthier
environment for kids to play and learn, and a safe
space in their community to connect with nature
and be creative.’

126. Key to an Integral approach to urban design
is the notion that although other aspects of
urban life are important, people (sentient
beings), as individuals and communities, are
the primary ‘purpose’ for making cities
thriveable. All other aspects (technology,
transport & infra-structure, health, education,
sustain-ability, economic development, etc.)
although playing a major part, are
secondary.
Urban Hub Series
These books are a series of presentations for
the use of Integral theory or an Integral
Meta-framework in understanding cities and
urban Thriveability.
Although each can stand alone, taken
together they give a more rounded
appreciation of how this broader framework
can help in the analysis and design of
thriveable urban environments.
Guides for Integrally Informed
Practitioners
The Guides for Integrally Informed
Practitioners (adjacent) cover much of the
theory behind the Integral Meta-framework
used in these volumes. For topics covered in
others volumes in this series see the
