Since our January meeting, Nan has visited Verizon and Hughes Academy. While visiting Carver’s showcase, she was introduced to Jacob Hickman with SC Alliance. Jacob is interested in becoming active in the Collaborative and working with our STEM Festival.
Jacob provided Nan with an email introduction to Deborah Cameron with New Carolina. Nan and Deborah will meet in March.
Nan provided an overview of the Collaborative to the assistant superintedents in Spartanburg County.
IQ-MS Research Project Showcase:
National Guard:
The National Guard would like to invite your school to participate in a new and exciting educational program available to engineering students across the country this year. The National Guard is pleased to offer FREE education material on Engineering Design and Failure. There is absolutely no financial obligation to your school to be involved in this program. With shrinking budgets and increasing spending cuts, the National Guard Engineering Education Program is an opportunity to support you and your students with additional information and resources at absolutely no extra cost.
Registration for the program is easy! To learn more about the program or sign up your school, just visit our website at www.nationalguardcareertech.com. To obtain your log in information contact the program coordinator, Katie Stachler, at 678-990-7474.
Education & Business Summit: Nan will submit a proposal for the Collaborative to present at the conference
STEM Summit Series: Focus—STEM and the Arts. Planning committee seeking presenters. Proposal applications can be found at the SC Coalition for Mathematics and Science website http://www.sccoalition.org
Nan provided a brief overview of the SCCMS/S2TEM Centers SC research project.
IQ-MS is a statewide initiative, encompassing 10 research sites across the state of SC. Our state is divided into 5 regions and between 1 and 3 research sites have been identified within each region for the IQ-MS project. Teachers in the project have access to collaborate with others across the state during face to face 3 day summer institutes, as well as ongoing virtual communication with one another through Edmodo during the school year.
Within each region, participating schools are supported by a Center-Based PI who meets quarterly with leadership teams to reflect on implementation of the project.
See first hand what this project is all about.
Learn about S²TEM Centers SC’s Boeing funded research grant.
Join the math and science teachers from Middle School of Pacolet as they share specific research-based disciplinary literacy strategies that engage students in purposeful reading, meaningful writing, and productive dialogue.
Visit virtual classrooms where middle school students engage in these strategies.
Hear a nationally known author, Dr. David Pugalee, speak about disciplinary literacy in the mathematics and science classroom.
Network over lunch (provided).
Prize drawing at closing. Must be present to win.

Tom provide an update on the STEM Asset Mapping:
Looking at a soft launch of the map on Pi Day (3.14) where a few of our STEM friends will be invited to try out the map as posters of information. In return for debugging assistance, there will be freebies!
The map will hopefully go live with a reasonably well populated map in early April.
Asset Mapping Background Information: The SC STEM ASSET Map will be a digital repository of visual and textual information that identifies a specified range of STEM education programs and resources located in South Carolina. This information will be accessible and useful to STEM constituencies including, educators, parents, students, scientists and engineers, professional organizations, economic development entities and government agencies.
The Asset Map is being built upon concepts of crowd-sourcing where the SC STEM community will populate data and information into the system, recommend and/or “like”, comment, and send out invitations.
The Asset Map is being developed by Clemson Computing and Information Technology (CCIT) with funding assistance from the Clemson University Center for Workforce Development (CUCWD) and SCCMS. SCCMS, through its relationships with a broad spectrum of STEM education stakeholders will guide MAP development such that it reflects the needs of probable users.
Marjorie has been in touch with several business/industry partners asking about their volunteer and/or retiree programs they have in place. Her inquiries generated a lot of positive interest.
Katie has been officially named Director of this program. She shared that 3M is providing corporate support for this initiative enabling Katie to provide broader services. SCCMS is seeking an ARC grant to further bolster the program. Milliken is providing materials/kits for use with the initiative.
Ryan provided an update of his initial research and thinking about an Upstate STEM Festival for 2015.
He has been talking with various contacts generating interest. Ryan is working on a “one pager” to “sell” the festival to potential funders.
Parting Thoughts
Meeting dismissed
Participants were asked to commit, in writing, to which of our priorities they are willing to work. We will begin work groups at our March meeting.
We may not need all of these dates, but would like to hold them in case we do.
