Flo Oy Wong, a Chinese-American artist, and Felicia Lowe, a documentary maker, take the short ferry ride to Angel Island often these days. Both are the daughters of at least one parent who came into the US illegally. Through art and film, they are bringing new attention to an old, and until now, obscure story. A story that happened in the place sometimes called the Ellis Island of the West.
This is the place where the US government, under an 1882 law called the Chinese Exclusion Act, tried to keep Chinese laborers and their families out of the country. send them back to China.
When I learned about Angel Island--
Lowe has documented both the pain of that rejection and the lies the immigrants had to tell to gain admittance to their chosen land.
--But it's a place that moves you, not only because the walls talk. And tell you stories. But because of the spirit and energy of this place.
Does it still move you?
Absolutely. Every time I come here, I have such deep feelings about the people who were here, especially knowing that my father was one of those people.
Felicia Lowe, who is raising funds and awareness to have the old immigration station restored, has documented on film Angel Island's history. The story begins with Chinese coming to America to work in the California gold fields. And to build the railroads in the mid 1800's. About a 100,000 Chinese lived in America in 1880.
When the economy went bad, anti-Chinese feeling became virulent, and congress voted to exclude all new Chinese immigrants, except certain categories. Merchants, teachers, and minor children of citizens. For the most part, wives of Chinese men already here, even if the men were citizens, could not enter legally, since US policy was to prevent families from settling here.
Judy Young teaches Asian American history at the University of California and has written about Angel Island's legacy. She calls the Chinese Exclusion Act blatant racism.
The Chinese were seen as being not only racially inferior, but they were seen as being political despotic. They were seen as being heathens. They were seen as being immoral, unethical, didn't treat their women right. They were just seen as being very un-American and undeserving of being American.
Despite being mostly unwelcome and illegal, Chinese kept arriving, though in smaller numbers. Starting in 1910, these new immigrants landed first at Angel Island to face immigration officers and possible deportation. It was an intimidating place. Barbed wire, guards, locked doors, and unfamiliar food.
Families were often split apart. Stays of two.

Locations include London for the 2012 Olympics, Honolulu, Hawaii, Istanbul, Turkey, Gallipoli, Turkey, Chichen Itza, Mexico, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the White House in Washington D.C., and Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia. The postcards encourage visiting these places and describe attractions like stadiums, beaches, historical sites, pyramids, mountains, presidential residences, and amusement parks.

- 1. Dear, Sis I had a fun journy in Ellis Island.Ellis Island opened in 1892 but i came in 2001.I was 13 when i went to Ellis Island. Ellis Island is better that it looks so i’m going to tell you some things about it to get your trip off your mind.I got to go to the American Immigraton History center that just opened.The American Immigration History center was really cool.We got to see immigrant arrival records.When i was there i saw a couple immigrants there.On my trip i stayed until 2008 now that’s a long time.During all those years nothing new really happened but in 2002 the Homeland Security Act opened.In 2008 the plans were announced for an expansion here on Ellis Island.Before i left they were starting to build the Ellis Island Immigration Museum they all said it won’t be completed until 2011 so maybe you will get to go see it.The museum will include the entire American Immigration experience all the way up to 2011.It should be finished when you get up there.When i went to go dine at Ellis Island you had just a few choices to pick from and immigrants got introduced to many new foods.When you go to dine i think you would like the food.Famouse people who passed through got to right their names on the entry of the U.S. Most of the famouse people you won’t really know because they are from back in like the 1900’s. A man named Fiorello La Guardia the mayor of New York City worked at Ellis Island for the Immigration Service he was a good worker but now he dosn’t work there anymore.Always remember that when you go to Ellis Island to check out their cool sites.When you go to Ellis Island like i did you will be on a later island and have to ride on a Ferry
- 2. to get onto Ellis Island.When i went to Ellis Island they had museums, places to eat, and places to go sight seeing and more cool stuff.When i went to Ellis Island i met immigrants and alot of friends.At Ellis Island there are people from all /over the world there were alot of launguages that i didn’t exactly understand.Ellis Island has alot of historical stuff there that you can see.Ellis Island is very unique when you go there you will know what i mean.On my journy i saw alot of things that i didn’t expect to be on Ellis Island.On Ellis Island there was even a hospital for people who get injured.Make sure to go to all the museums they have some cool interesting and historic things in there.In 2008 when i left i had alot of friends which you should have to.When you go to Ellis Island you will be entering the U.S. Ellis Island is a great place to go.I hope you aren’t afraid anymore Yours truly, Jenna Swope
