There are three main types of precipitation: orographic, convectional, and cyclonic. Orographic precipitation occurs when warm moist air rises over mountains, cooling and condensing into rain or snow. Convectional precipitation results from warm air near the ground surface rising rapidly into the atmosphere and cooling to form clouds. Cyclonic or frontal precipitation is caused by the collision of warm and cold air masses, where the warm air is forced to rise over the cold air along fronts, cooling and condensing to produce rain or snow.
