The Saudi workforce landscape is changing, with Saudization back firmly at the top of the government's agenda. Numerous employment reforms have been implemented since the announcement of Vision 2030 in April 2016, of which one of the key focal points is to reduce the percentage of unemployed nationals to 9% by 2020. With the percentage of unemployed Saudi nationals reaching and all time high of 12.9%, the government looks to increase automation to reduce foreign workers in construction and focus on sectors including retail, transport and tourism, to generate jobs for Saudi nationals. In 2016, the government announced the latest version of the Nitaqat scheme, its third amendment to the scheme in five years, with a goal of increasing the momentum of the Saudization process.
