The United Nations headquarters in New York is undergoing a $2 billion renovation to upgrade security, address asbestos and other health issues, and modernize the 60-year old complex. The project has faced some challenges including disruptions from construction noise interfering with Security Council meetings and complaints about the lack of consultation with staff. The renovations are strengthening the buildings against terrorism with blast-proof windows while also aiming to preserve the original modernist architecture and design of the 1950s-era buildings. The project is expected to be completed by September 2014.
