UIFSA is the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act, which was developed in 1992 to provide clarity and expand circumstances for ordering child support across state lines. It has been adopted by all states including Virginia. UIFSA establishes bases for personal jurisdiction over nonresidents to order child support if they resided or conceived a child in the state, among other connections. For example, if a couple conceived a child while vacationing in Maine but live in New York, UIFSA allows Maine to order child support even though the father has no other ties to Maine. The goal of UIFSA is to make it easier to enforce child support obligations across state lines.
