Ⅰ-1 Background
In October 2011, Japan sets up the Elderly House with Supportive Service (EHSS) registration system, helping
elderly to live continuously where they are accustomed to until they need supportive services.
The “Registration criteria” for EHSS were
the following:
【1】House : The house should be barrier-free.
The area of each dwelling unit should be 25㎡
or more, and must be equipped with a kitchen,
toilet, storage facility, washroom, and bathroom.
【2】Service: The house should provide situation
confirmation service and life consultation services [1].
Since then, “EHSS has spread to a certain extent
in a short period”[2]. Fig.1 shows the registration
status of EHSS by Oct.2020 [1].

Ⅰ-2 The purpose of this paper
The purpose of my research is focusing on the actual living conditions of the
elderly in EHSS, finding the problem, and try to provide an ideal living space for the
elderly, where psychological satisfaction and excitement of the elderly can be
provided. To this end, the literature review on the design of the EHSS is carried out
first.
P.4
Ⅰ-3 Method of the research
We searched the original papers from Oct.2011 to Jun.2020,with the terms “Elderly House with
Supportive Services”, “living”, “space ”in Google Scholar. And then based on the titles and
abstracts of the papers, we extracted 14 papers that dealt with the elderly`s actual life and living space
design of the EHSS.
For these papers, first, we used KHCoder (ver.3.0.0.0) to analyze all data. Next we discussed the
creativity of the EHSS’s design and the EHSS’s functions . Using KHCoder, we analyzed the data as
following:
(a) Frequency List of Words (words used frequently);
(b) Co-Occurrence Network (words with similar appearances) ;
(c) KWIC Concordance (related word search);

network of words
It is said that circles
connected by lines are close to
each other and appear in
common and have a co-
occurrence relationship. The
size of the circle indicates the
number of occurrences. Circles
of the same color indicate that
the extracted words are close to
each other.
“House” is the biggest circle
connected with “elderly” in the
network. After that, “House”
could be connected with
“service” and “life” through the
“elderly”.

Ⅲ.Survey
Ⅲ-1 Survey on EHSS
The EHSS is,
“(1) Barrier-free house based on a rental contract,
(2) A house where safety assurance and basic services, take life consultation as an example, is provided to
the residents,
(3) Meal services are provided in most houses,
(4) Nursing care and medical care can be delivered as home care services from business establishments
inside or outside the house”[4].
[4] I. Yukiko, Issues for proper maintenance of housing for the elderly with high-quality services, vol.47 No.4 p.119-124 Quarterly, Social
Security Research
Ⅲ-2 Literature review on the life in EHSS and
the design of EHSS
• From Oct.2011 to Jun.2020, the design of EHSS has been investigated. Through the analysis with
KHCoder, we statistically analyzed the data. We got the conclusion as following:
The keywords of the literature on EHSS are "house," “move-in," "elderly," "life," "nursing care,"
"service", and“space".
The whole co-occurrence net is divided into main 5 topics:
•Group ①focus on the usage status of the elderly in common spaces;
•Group ② focus on the providing of nursing care services;
•Group ③ focus on the living condition of the elderly in EHSS, and the management, region, and
location of EHSS.
•Group ④ focus on the improvement of the EHSS’s environment;
•Group ⑤ focus on“nursing care”, home-visit care and the support from the service associations.
Ⅳ-1 Discussion on the EHSS’s creativity
Ⅳ.Discussion
• Taura and Nagai categorized three types of designs [8]: pattern expression type,
problem-solving type, and ideal pursuit type. And creativity is deeply related to the
so-called 'analytical ability’ in problem-solving design.
• Accordingly, EHSS could be thought as the type of problem-solving. EHSS
analyzed and solved the elderly’s housing problem, so this ‘analyzing ability' is
regarded as the creativity of the design of EHSS. As prior literatures proposed a lot
of related problems in the design of the EHSS, this ‘analyzing ability' is also
referred to as the creativity in these papers.
[8] T. Taura, Y. Nagai, Design creativity, and concept generation 17(1), Cognitive Studies, 2020, pp66-82.
P.16
Ⅳ-2 Discussion on the functions of the EHSS
• Noguchi and Nagai [5] said that “It is considered that there are several levels of functions in artifacts as
follows. (1) Physical function (2) Physiological function (3) Psychological function.”
• EHSS is an artifact, and EHSS has the following three levels of function:
(1) EHSS`s Physical function: providing a house with safety and security
(2) EHSS`s Physiological function: providing a house with peace of mind
(3) EHSS`s Psychological function: Providing a house with psychological satisfaction
• Through literature review with KHCoder, EHSS provides a house with barrier-free design to finish its
Physical function, and it provides supportive service to finish its Physiological function. But we can’t find the
research topic about the elderly’s Psychological satisfaction.
[5] H. Noguchi, Y. Nagai, On the Relation between Concept of Function and Expression of Meaning in Design Thinking
Process Design Symposium 2004 Lecture Collection 2004.7.8-9,Tokyo
Ⅴ.Future Tasks
• Further research is going to focus on the psychological function of EHSS and to ensure the satisfaction of
elderly residents.
• A good design of EHSS needs to meet four criteria:
(1) it is safe and convenient for the elderly`s daily life,
(2) care services can be provided conveniently,
(3) the elderly would move their body and do physical excise to promote their health,
(4) the elderly could have better communication with others, so that they could have mental joy and
satisfaction.
Through the literature review, (1) and (2) have almost finished successfully. However, we still need to pay
more attention to (3) and (4).
Ⅴ.Future Tasks
•Why should we pay more attention to (3) and (4)?
• On one hand, for elderly moving their body and doing exercise could prevent
illnesses. They could live independently without other's help and be more confident,
in order to improve the sense of happiness in life.
•On the other hand, better communication among elderly residents and
professional staff could make elderly get mental support from others, which ensures
elderly residents’ satisfaction.
•In one word, the design of EHSS may pay more attention to improving the health
and better communication of the elderly. Specifically, more attention should be paid
to the public space in EHSS and the activities of the elderly in order to help the
elderly to achieve emotional satisfaction and happiness.
Thanks for your attention!

For these papers, first, we used KHCoder (ver.3.0.0.0) to analyze all data. Next we discussed the creativity of the EHSS’s design and the EHSS’s functions . Using KHCoder, we analyzed the data as following: (a) Frequency List of Words (words used frequently); (b) Co-Occurrence Network (words with similar appearances) ; (c) KWIC Concordance (related word search); P.5

  • 7. Fig.2 Co-occurrence network of words Ⅱ-2 Co-occurrence network of words It is said that circles connected by lines are close to each other and appear in common and have a co- occurrence relationship. The size of the circle indicates the number of occurrences. Circles of the same color indicate that the extracted words are close to each other. “House” is the biggest circle connected with “elderly” in the network. After that, “House” could be connected with “service” and “life” through the “elderly”. P.7

  • 14. Ⅲ.Survey Ⅲ-1 Survey on EHSS The EHSS is, “(1) Barrier-free house based on a rental contract, (2) A house where safety assurance and basic services, take life consultation as an example, is provided to the residents, (3) Meal services are provided in most houses, (4) Nursing care and medical care can be delivered as home care services from business establishments inside or outside the house”[4]. • 15. Ⅲ-2 Literature review on the life in EHSS and the design of EHSS • From Oct.2011 to Jun.2020, the design of EHSS has been investigated. Through the analysis with KHCoder, we statistically analyzed the data. We got the conclusion as following: The keywords of the literature on EHSS are "house," “move-in," "elderly," "life," "nursing care," "service", and“space". The whole co-occurrence net is divided into main 5 topics: •Group ①focus on the usage status of the elderly in common spaces; •Group ② focus on the providing of nursing care services; •Group ③ focus on the living condition of the elderly in EHSS, and the management, region, and location of EHSS. •Group ④ focus on the improvement of the EHSS’s environment; •Group ⑤ focus on“nursing care”, home-visit care and the support from the service associations.
  • 16. Ⅳ-1 Discussion on the EHSS’s creativity Ⅳ.Discussion • Taura and Nagai categorized three types of designs [8]: pattern expression type, problem-solving type, and ideal pursuit type. And creativity is deeply related to the so-called 'analytical ability’ in problem-solving design. • Accordingly, EHSS could be thought as the type of problem-solving. EHSS analyzed and solved the elderly’s housing problem, so this ‘analyzing ability' is regarded as the creativity of the design of EHSS. As prior literatures proposed a lot of related problems in the design of the EHSS, this ‘analyzing ability' is also referred to as the creativity in these papers. [8] T. Taura, Y. Nagai, Design creativity, and concept generation 17(1), Cognitive Studies, 2020, pp66-82. P.16
  • 17. Ⅳ-2 Discussion on the functions of the EHSS • Noguchi and Nagai [5] said that “It is considered that there are several levels of functions in artifacts as follows. (1) Physical function (2) Physiological function (3) Psychological function.” • EHSS is an artifact, and EHSS has the following three levels of function: (1) EHSS`s Physical function: providing a house with safety and security (2) EHSS`s Physiological function: providing a house with peace of mind (3) EHSS`s Psychological function: Providing a house with psychological satisfaction • Through literature review with KHCoder, EHSS provides a house with barrier-free design to finish its Physical function, and it provides supportive service to finish its Physiological function. But we can’t find the research topic about the elderly’s Psychological satisfaction. [5] H. Noguchi, Y. Nagai, On the Relation between Concept of Function and Expression of Meaning in Design Thinking Process Design Symposium 2004 Lecture Collection 2004.7.8-9,Tokyo
  • 18. Ⅴ.Future Tasks • Further research is going to focus on the psychological function of EHSS and to ensure the satisfaction of elderly residents. • A good design of EHSS needs to meet four criteria: (1) it is safe and convenient for the elderly`s daily life, (2) care services can be provided conveniently, (3) the elderly would move their body and do physical excise to promote their health, (4) the elderly could have better communication with others, so that they could have mental joy and satisfaction. Through the literature review, (1) and (2) have almost finished successfully. However, we still need to pay more attention to (3) and (4).
  • 19. Ⅴ.Future Tasks •Why should we pay more attention to (3) and (4)? • On one hand, for elderly moving their body and doing exercise could prevent illnesses. They could live independently without other's help and be more confident, in order to improve the sense of happiness in life. •On the other hand, better communication among elderly residents and professional staff could make elderly get mental support from others, which ensures elderly residents’ satisfaction. •In one word, the design of EHSS may pay more attention to improving the health and better communication of the elderly. Specifically, more attention should be paid to the public space in EHSS and the activities of the elderly in order to help the elderly to achieve emotional satisfaction and happiness.
