Greetings– My name is William Lee and wish to welcome you to my Theological Laboratory. I am excited at the chance to share my discoveries and beliefs with regard to God’s intention for us as the church and even as individuals. Thank you for allowing me this time. I do not propose to have created anything but merely believe to have discovered what God left for me and for us– let us begin. The21st century church is an amazing entity. As we navigate this amazingly fast paced, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, anti- establishmentarian, “reality” television show, 500 cable channel, “fantasy” world, the church is challenged to navigate this time by becoming something new and at the same time retaining what first made us the church. I submit for this challenge what I have come to call, the M.A.P.P. The M.A.P.P. (The Mission, the Assignments, the Pillars, the Picture; see image above) is my depiction of what Jesus calls us to receive as the template for the church’s work for all times. In this presentation I will unpack each element but first we should talk about the Image we hold of the church
Scripture and Song have provided us with a number of metaphors and images for the church. Each powerful and applicable in its context but we need an image that speaks not simply to what the church can offer, but an image that captures the functionality of the church as a physical location, an organization and an organism.
Without question the images and metaphors we have heard over the years have helped many of us to deal with trouble and hold onto the promise of triumph – and I believe that is a good thingBut what if a metaphor or image is actually part of the church’s problem- let me be more specific--Church as a hospital for sinners is a common image- one that I held onto as a I made way into the kingdom at the age of 25 but as churches empty out in every denomination across the country I believe that very image and others like it have actually created environments that perpetuate the exodus. This image is powerful, easily applied and understood but what is it understood as. The church as a hospital relegates most of the church to “patient” status, to be worked on. I believe the image creates a scenario where people only come when hurting, to be worked on and not to do work themselves. When they “feel” better, they leave. Just like at a hospital.

Maybe we need to push the image more and not assume the Hospital posture but more of a rehabilitation centerDue to my active athletic youth I have had to participate in rehabilitation programs for knee and hip injuriesAnd here, far more so than in a hospital– I had to do the work and assume responsibility for my return to good health but , when I felt better – I was gonePhysical therapy, requires some participation by the “patient” and that’s powerful but again, When they “feel” better, they leave
After some reflection I arrived at the image of a Locker Room. As a varsity team player in school I remember the locker room as a place where: the team Gathered - we Dressed (which involves taking off what doesn’t aid your performance as well as putting on what does;We prepared to performWe dealt with injuries (things that might hinder our performance)heard from the coach, we reviewed strategy, studied our opponent, reviewed our goals; went over the game-plangathered our equipment; We celebrated and even prayed. . Most importantly, the locker room was always a place of getting ready , a place of changing I understand the church to be a place, an atmosphere and an experience of Preparation & transformation!!The Locker room image paints the Church as place of action and not apathy, of change and not complacency. I believe this image best sets the tone and filter for what I understand the church to be.I expect people to be changed through song, through sermons, through study, through service and through sharing with one another
And now the MAPP. . .
The M.A.P.P. serves as our compass and instructional guide regarding how we go about Serving. It will help us to discern our future, evaluate our present and maintain our identity and purpose..The MAPP is made of 4 main pieces which areThe Mission (M)The Assignments (A)The Pillars (P)And the Picture (P), First the Mission.
The Mission is our ultimate purpose and reason for existence– its not what we can do but what we were meant and designed to do.
The Mission for the church is a two-fold charge that holds an Institutional as well as individual component for each believer:The Institution charge is found in Mt. 28: 19-20:The Text is understood as a call to evangelism (go make disciples of all the nations) a call us to disciple the nations (Training them to obey), and a call to build a fellowship ( baptism is initiation), The Individual charge is revealed in Mt. 22: 37-40, Jesus responds to a Pharisee’s challenge, “What is the greatest commandment?” Jesus’ response, “to Love the Lord your God was greatest and the second was just like it, Love your neighbor. Here the call to worship is revealed in our loving God and our call to service in loving our neighbor.Evangelism, Discipleship, Fellowship, Worship and Service.In the end, the 5 new testament church assignments are revealed and we see the church is called to grow in Christ, to grow in quantity, to grow in quality and to grow in unity. Now lets talk about the 5 assignments. . .
The 5assignments again are Ministry, Worship, Evangelism, Fellowship and Discipleship. In an effort to make the assignments memorable I substituted some words and arranged them into a portable and memorable acronym, S.H.I.F.T.:S = Serve= Ministry/ MissionH = Honor= WorshipI= Introduce= Evangelism F= Fellowship= FellowshipT= Train= DiscipleshipPlease notice how my image still holds: church as a place of change, a place where we SHIFT.
Allow me now a moment to providewider context with more scriptures in order to reveal how Jesus’ ministry and the New Testament accounts of the early church reflect a consistent engaging and fulfilling of these assignments.SERVE: (Ministry/ Mission) work for, render obedienceGalatians 5:13You my brothers were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge in sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.Honor: (Worship) revere, to accept as valid and conform to requestJohn 4:23-24 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the FatherIn spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.Introduce: (Evangelism) bring a person to first knowledge or experienceJohn 1:40-42Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” and he brought him to Jesus.Fellowship (Fellowship) intimacy, camaraderie Hebrews 10:24-25And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-”Train: (Discipleship) Develop or form habits, thoughts or behavior1 Cor. 9:25-27Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore, I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave. . .so I myself will not be disqualified from the prize.
So far we have reviewed The M: Mission, and the A: Assignments now on to the first P:Pillars: this is the standard we use in pursuing the ultimate purposeMeaning , as we engage in the Assignments that we must perform to complete the ultimate purpose (mission) we do not Simply go about it any manner but we apply the following pillars that make our work holy and Unique. Each Assignment, action, program or event is completed with Christ, the Bible, Excellence and Community as its guiding and inspirational Forces.
Christ CenteredMark 9 holds the story of Jesus’ Transfiguration, when Moses and Elijah (representing the law and the prophetsAre seen in conversation with Jesus and ultimately as fulfilled in Jesus – Christ centeredBible Based 2 Tim 3:16Paul writes to his protégé Timothy and reminds, all he needs to pastor the people and lead Jesus’ Church is found in scripture which points to the kingdom and also is profitable for the now living time. – Bible based.Expressed Excellence Mal 1: 13 -14The next text is the only Old Testament text but I felt I it necessary to include at least one OT reference since our faith is built on the foundation of the old testament. In Malachi God addresses a stiff necked and stingy people and makes a bold statement regarding those who would short change or cheat God, simply, you are Cursed- Brothers and sister God expects our best – excellence!Community Connection 1 Cor. 9:22Finally we return to the writing of Paul who models for us what we must keep in mind in carrying the news of the Gospel to all nations--- to help people become more like Christ we must first become like them, “I became all things to all people, that I might win some.” Understand and master the ethos of the Community.
So M= MissionA= AssignmentsP= PillarsThe Final element of the MAPP is Picture or Vision.It is the sketch of God’s future for us—The Picture is both a commentary on the now time and a challenge for our future. It serves as a landmark in our pursuit of completing the mission. The Picture is a sketch of God’s future for the church itemized under the Assignments of the church (S.H.I.F.T.) it establishes goals with regard to amount and dates creation, growth, expansion and development
The itemization is just as important as the idea. Habakkuk testifies this instruction:Write down the revelation and make it plain… This instruction make it plain was necessary and yet remains so– those who are not privy to the sight of the Picture (Vision) must be able to understand it. It also puts flesh to the work and effort the Church is preparing to engage.

Each part of the MAPP, the mission, the assignments and the Pillars are each givenConsideration in terms of development and expansion. We trust that the Assignments performed Under the standard set by the pillars leads to realization of the Picture and fulfillment of our mission.
I believe this text clearly lifts up the purpose and role of a pastor namely, not to do all ministry but to teach and empower the body to do ministry. With this understanding the question becomes, what does it take for a pastor to perform the role?
Transformational Leaders Equip and EmpowerIt is often the source of heated debate and can lead to the disintegration of the relation between Pastor and people. To set the Pastor’s foundation we need only to review the model Jesus established with his first church, the disciples. To recruit, to equip and to deploy.I understand that many churches need the pastor to also serve as chief fundraiser, caregiver and administrator. These roles may be carried by the Pastor but for the church and the pastor to reach their fullest potential these responsibilities need to be delegated to well prepared and able members (Exo. 18: 17 – 26; Jethro schools Moses). Now, let us unpack the biblical source and functioning of today’s pastor as transformational leader..
Recruiting (Leadership):Mt 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”As the face and human voice of the ministry the pastor must be visible, accessible, analytical, engaging, courageous, a critical thinker, able to meet folk where the are, able to cast vision and able to develop a team. These attributes sit at the core of leadership and are fundamental to the pastor’s role as chief recruiter. The Pastor’s ability to recruit and teach others to recruit is vital to the vitality and fulfillment of the church.
Equipping (Teacher/Storyteller):Matthew 5- 7: Sermon on the MountSecond, the pastor is required to teach (disciple) through modeling, through study, through sermons, through programming and through conversation. He is charged with crafting and re-crafting the story of a people (i.e. church, city or race) in order to reveal the reality, relevancy and reliability of the Kingdom. The Sermon on the Mount is one of the largest contiguous sections of recorded teaching done by Jesus and serves as exhibit A in establishing the role of teacher/ storyteller.
Firstly, this is a vision statement- segmented and systematic. It lays out a plan for the disciples to follow including assignments (…be witnesses) and directionality (Jerusalem, then Judea, then Samaria and finally to the end of the world.) The pastor must be visionary in this manner, which is different from being a dreamer. Dreamers may see a future picture but often, are unable to assess assignments or directionality in order to achieve the picture. The church’s vitality is connected to the Pastor’s ability to discern and deploy the necessary elements of the vision. Secondly, a pastor must empower laity to assume responsibility and actualize their God-given gifts
The Lord has blessed me to experience full time paid ministry in several different ministries ranging from traditional to transitional to Contemporary, small to Large ministry, both urban and suburban settings as executive pastor, assistant pastor and founding pastor. I began my career in 1998 as youth Pastor at Emmanuel Baptist in Bklyn, 2 years later I was promoted to Executive Pastor for 2 yearsWhen I was recruited by Macedonia church in Pittsburgh where I served as EXP – for 2 yearsI then returned to Emmanuel as assistant pastor in 2004.In 2006 I served as launch pastor under the umbrella of Emmanuel Baptist – We launched Ai ministries in Jersey City and I led them for 3 years.Currently I serve as Pastor for Young adults under at Mt.
