- Hi everyone! I’m going to give you my perspective on why you should be interested in green bloggers as a business person, and how they can help you. I’ll also tell you about some of my favorite sites, and give you some blog reading tips along the way.

- green blogs can be written by individuals, groups of people, or large organizations. Corporations, NGOs, and news organizations, all produce blogs too. as with any source of information, its really important to think about the people who are creating and framing the stories, and take their biases into account. This is clearer on some sites than others. Checking the authors’ bios can be helpful too.

- personally, i read green blogs because i find them engaging and entertaining. they also help me to keep track of what’s going on in the world of sustainability. as business people, green bloggers are in a position to provide us with lots of great publicity too!
- there’s about 50 million blog readers in the US, but the green blog demographic is a bit more specific: people who are educated, and who already have some connection or interest to sustainability. Audience members often comment and contribute to blogs. The best sites really spur conversations between the producers and audience.
- There are three primary categories that most green blogs fall into. -news--policy, current, events, etc, -business: focus on the business of sustainability--perhaps most relevant for Presidians. -lifestyle: some combination of news, advice, items of interest, etc.

- and within each of those categories, there are sites that focus on food, agriculture, home, architecture, design, fashion, energy, transportation, and ever more niche subjects.
- if you don’t feel like going to the site, there are variety of other options to find and read information from top blogs. my favorite way is an ipad app called flipbook, which formats facebook, twitter and blog sites likes the huffington post and good into an electronic magazine format.
- I’m sure you all have your go to lists, so I’m going to tell you about my own favorite green blogs, and why. i’ll also give you some examples of recent stories that grabbed my attention. obviously this is reflective of my particular interests and focus, but hopefully you can take my approach and make it your own.
- Grist provides a good overview of sustainability related news. The writing is high quality, and its kind of the grandfather of green blogs--one of the first and best, often cited in top green blogs lists. This picture is captioned: Let this poor little fish teach you to save water. Leave that faucet flagrantly running and pitiful little Goldie the Goldfish will see the water level in her fishbowl plummet. How could you do that to poor Goldie?
- this may seem boring, but the new york times is still the paper of record, and, well, the wall street journal doesn’t have a green blog. so this is about as close to a mainstream perspective on green as you’re going to get in the blogosphere. they cover a variety of topics, from dry cleaning to bedbugs to coal. its a great place to get a broad perspective and well written posts from respected experts.
- greenbiz is probably the largest and best known business focused green blog around. The main greenbiz sections are: energy, resource efficiency, design, small business, operations, and marketing. this picture is from a story about water footprinting, not something you’re as likely to find on the nyt site... joel makower, the editor in chief, has some clout in the sustainability world, and has partnered with underwriters laboratory to develop a new verification system.
- and of course, we can’t forget our very own triplepundit, founded by presidio alum nick aster and staffed by many members of the presidio community, including yours truly. ;) Stories on 3p take a triple bottom line approach to business reporting. They’ve managed to rise to the top of the heap quickly, and have partnerships with many schools, businesses, and other sites.
- according to their website: “GOOD Magazine is about moving things forward, and we're here to celebrate progress wherever we see it come to life. This is the emerging sensibility in our world and that gets us fired up.” I’ve only gotten into good recently, thanks to presidio friends like chelsea, but I find that they have some of the most amusing and attention grabbing stories of all of these sites. They also have a lot of awesome infographics, which are a particular interest of mine.
- ecosalon is a lifestyle focused green blog, they aggregate a content from other blogs and report on food, design, fashion, technology, and travel. These pictures are from a story on air pollution caused by soot, and one on how to recycle old perfume bottles--stories that hardly seem like they belong on the same blog, but they make it work.
- This is one of my all time favorite blogs. It’s a personal blog run by chef Heidi Swanson. She publishes a vegetarian recipe every day, and has parlayed her success as a blogger into cookbooks. Some of the best food porn ever, but with a focus on healthy and sustainable.
- So if 101 cookbooks is where i go to get cooking inspiration, civil eats is where i go to find out about pretty much all other sustainable food related topics. According to their website, Civil Eats promotes critical thought about sustainable agriculture and food systems as part of building economically and socially just communities. they also have one of the most comprehensive lists of food justice and sustainable food focused sites and organizations on the internet.
- Inhabitat’s model is: “green design will save world.” they focus on architecture and home design, but also have sections on art, technology and fashion. Presidio student Evelyn Lee is an inhabitat contributor.
