Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge.
Its goal is to find out how the world works, to seek what regularities
there may be, to penetrate the connections of things—from subnuclear
particles, which may be the constituents of all matter, to living
organisms, the human social community, and thence to the cosmos as a
whole. Our intuition is by no means an infallible guide. Our
perceptions may be distorted by training and prejudice or merely
because of the limitations of our sense organs, which, of course,
perceive directly but a small fraction of the phenomena of the world.
Even so straightforward a question as whether in the absence of friction
a pound of lead falls faster than a gram of fluff was answered
incorrectly by Aristotle and almost everyone else before the time of
Galileo. Science is based on experiment, on a willingness to challenge
old dogma, on an openness to see the universe as it really is.
Accordingly, science sometimes requires courage—at the very least the
courage to question the conventional wisdom.
Beyond this the main trick of science is to really think of something: the
shape of clouds and their occasional sharp bottom edges at the same
altitude everywhere in the sky; the formation of the dewdrop on a leaf;
the origin of a name or a word—Shakespeare, say, or "philanthropic";
the reason for human social customs—the incest taboo, for example;
how it is that a lens in sunlight can make paper burn; how a "walking
stick" got to look so much like a twig; why the Moon seems to follow us
as we walk; what prevents us from digging a hole down to the center of
the Earth; what the definition is of "down" on a spherical Earth; how it
is possible for the body to convert yesterday's lunch into today's muscle
and sinew; or how far is up—does the universe go on forever, or if it
does not, is there any meaning to the question of what lies on the other
side? Some of these questions are pretty easy. Others, especially the
last, are mysteries to which no one even today knows the answer. They
are natural questions to ask. Every culture has posed such questions in
one way or another. Almost always the proposed answers are in the
nature of "Just So Stories," attempted explanations divorced from
experiment, or even from careful comparative observations.
But the scientific cast of mind examines the world critically as if many
alternative worlds might exist, as if other things might be here which
are not. Then we are forced to ask why what we see is present and not
something else. Why are the Sun and the Moon and the planets
spheres? Why not pyramids, or cubes, or dodecahedra? Why not
irregular, jumbly shapes? Why so sym.

Based on a very true story -
Around the turn of the millenium, I befriended an 80-year old ex-serviceman who came from the one of the great war days and a very smart computer programmer from a national space agency. The ex-serviceman always had ideas that sounded very strange which he was not able to explain the reasons for. However, upon further detailed investigation, we always found that his ideas were based on some fundamental truths and facts. Over the years we learnt to trust his hunches.
One day, he found out that I was flying drones and he told me to fly drones all over the world to spread mushroom spores because, according to him, the world needs more rain. As usual, he was not able to explain why. I did further research and as usual found out that he good reasons.
However, flying drones all over the world was almost an impossibility for me. So instead of flying them, we came up with the idea of impressing people on the need to plant more mushroom and hope that in each region, someone will undertake the endeavour.
This movie was the result of his idea. We wanted people to step into movie theatres thinking that mushroom is food. And for them to think that the Earth is a living, “thinking” being having her own “consciousness” with mushrooms being a vital mechanism in that planetary brain. The movie was supposed to be developed with CGI into a 3D 360-degree VR view to immerse the audience into the experiencing a planet-sized brain inside the Earth.
The movie idea was aborted when my good friend suddenly passed on.

Searching for Intelligent Life on Other Planets is a Goal Worth Pursuing
Abstract
For centuries, humans have tilted back their heads and gazed upon the heavens in wonder. What’s out there and are we alone in this universe? This paper addresses the need for humans worldwide to continue our search for life on other planets, and argues that it is our natural instinct to discover new worlds, much like the early explorers of the 15th Century. The paper covers the leadership role of SETI, as well as the projected funds for such missions. Themes from fields like astrobiology, economics and motivation will be considered and analyzed from a neutral standpoint. This paper will entertain the notion that we may, in fact, be alone in this universe. Aside from the money, the interest and the people advocating for the extra-terrestrial search, this paper will also address the mathematical probability of life existing in our galaxy, using the famed Drake Equation, contemplating the “habitable zone,” and even looking at evidence of life already found. The paper concludes, explaining why the search for intelligent life on other planets and our universe is a worthwhile goal.

Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. Based on a very true story -
Around the turn of the millenium, I befriended an 80-year old ex-serviceman who came from the one of the great war days and a very smart computer programmer from a national space agency. The ex-serviceman always had ideas that sounded very strange which he was not able to explain the reasons for. However, upon further detailed investigation, we always found that his ideas were based on some fundamental truths and facts. Over the years we learnt to trust his hunches.
One day, he found out that I was flying drones and he told me to fly drones all over the world to spread mushroom spores because, according to him, the world needs more rain. As usual, he was not able to explain why. I did further research and as usual found out that he good reasons.
However, flying drones all over the world was almost an impossibility for me. So instead of flying them, we came up with the idea of impressing people on the need to plant more mushroom and hope that in each region, someone will undertake the endeavour.
This movie was the result of his idea. We wanted people to step into movie theatres thinking that mushroom is food. And for them to think that the Earth is a living, “thinking” being having her own “consciousness” with mushrooms being a vital mechanism in that planetary brain. The movie was supposed to be developed with CGI into a 3D 360-degree VR view to immerse the audience into the experiencing a planet-sized brain inside the Earth.
The movie idea was aborted when my good friend suddenly passed on.

Searching for Intelligent Life on Other Planets is a Goal Worth Pursuing
Abstract
For centuries, humans have tilted back their heads and gazed upon the heavens in wonder. What’s out there and are we alone in this universe? This paper addresses the need for humans worldwide to continue our search for life on other planets, and argues that it is our natural instinct to discover new worlds, much like the early explorers of the 15th Century. The paper covers the leadership role of SETI, as well as the projected funds for such missions. Themes from fields like astrobiology, economics and motivation will be considered and analyzed from a neutral standpoint. This paper will entertain the notion that we may, in fact, be alone in this universe. Aside from the money, the interest and the people advocating for the extra-terrestrial search, this paper will also address the mathematical probability of life existing in our galaxy, using the famed Drake Equation, contemplating the “habitable zone,” and even looking at evidence of life already found. The paper concludes, explaining why the search for intelligent life on other planets and our universe is a worthwhile goal.

A Deep Dive into ScyllaDB's Architecture

We will also touch on the upcoming changes to ScyllaDB architecture, moving to strongly consistent metadata and tablets.
Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
