Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

The research into shapes, lines, geometry belongs to the history of Tonalite Spa as to that of the architectural firm ARX SRL by Paolo Di Nardo. In this encounter
between two creative realities, one aimed towards the conceptualization and design of a project, the other to the pursuit of aesthetic taste through ceramics,
thanks to the knowledge of the technological execution, was born a common project: the product line GEOMETRIA. Tonalite S.p.A. is constantly researches the
expressiveness of ceramics, in which simplicity becomes the vector of an aesthetic research which aims to combine the ceramic tradition with the contemporary
technology, always in transformation and evolution.
Ludovico Quaroni
«The geometry is therefore the means by which we delimit, we cut, we specify, simple and regular we form the space that is the basic material for architecture. Being the
recognition of shapes an essential condition for the architectural message to be understood, the forms will therefore be much more perceptible and recognizable, the more
they will be distinctive and not confusable with others, and so simple and regular».
Ludovico Quaroni

7. Linea Geometria
The research into shapes, lines, geometry belongs to the history of Tonalite Spa
The origin of the word Geometria (Geometry), clearly states how the mathematical relationships between the elements are capable of giving order and beauty to
the “earth”, the primary element of ceramics. The mathematical order so draws a balance always willing to iterations and interpretations, in the final forms that
are generated. At the same time the simplicity, the “simple forms and regular” belong to that aesthetic baggage and unconscious common to people of every
origin and location. A common aesthetic experience, which, as a diaphragm memory, activates before the pure geometric shapes that appear to the eye. Circle,
square, triangle, rectangle and their derivatives now belong to a Common Aesthetic Code. The series Geometria, to emphasize the simplicity and thus the purity
of the forms, has worked, for the first time, on the three-dimensionality of the ceramic element and the disappearance of the material of the seam between the
elements (grouting). The extrusion of the chosen shape, from time to time between “pure” ones, allows not only to give spaciousness to the surface but at the
same time to work, technologically in section, in order to cover the filler, of any color or thickness, that would lose balance and the ethereal image of pure forms.

The product line Geometria has a constant compositive topic: the absence of spacing. The pure form would lose its expressive and volumetric simplicity if it were
interrupted by the grout lines at the contact points between the tiles. Linea Geometria through the extrusion of the circular shape and the recess of its edges
allows to realize smooth and continuous surfaces such as panels of furniture. Forms, like the colors, you can shape and through the different tones of light express
aesthetic effects of certain visual effect. In the product line Geometria, the grout line disappears into thin air.

13. Cerchio
The first Series of the product Line Geometria is Cerchio.
It could only be the circle the first geometric figure of the product line Geometria, because it represents, more than any other geometric figures related to it, the
perfection as the “origin” of things. But Circle, seen as “zero”, as the start number, it is also the symbol of the whole, the empty, the universe, the start of a Series.
Compared to the other figures, this perfect shape, for symbolism and meaning, has the property to replicate itself without losing its role as the individual and
recognizable element, thanks also to the use of color. This dual characteristic of being a free standing and part of a “whole”, allows to decline languages and uses
of the ceramic coating with multiple compositional expressiveness. The Tonalite’s circle becomes flexible to any use or purpose of decoration.

Production
The product line GEOMETRIA, in the production of individual elements, condenses ceramics technology industrialization and craftsmanship. In the manufacturing
process GEOMETRIA passes from a first step of mixing grains of atomized powder with 17/20% of water, to a second stage of its compaction with extraction of
the air contained to make the mixture cohesive, and finally, the third step of pressing it into a mould, modelling the tiles to arrive at the final shape. But there
is a final stage which makes GEOMETRIA unique and unrepeatable: the finishing to remove the swarf which comes out during compression. The meaning of this
passage indicates not only the uniqueness of the product, but the care and conviction towards the idea of a new product, extruded and three-dimensional, that is
able to express the ceramic surface as full and uninterrupted by joints.
