The La Tomatina Tomato Festival is held annually in Buñol, Spain on the last Wednesday of August. Over 100 metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets by tens of thousands of participants from around the world during an hour-long tomato fight. The week-long festival also includes music, parades, dancing, fireworks and a paella cooking contest the night before the tomato fight. While the festival began casually in 1945, it wasn't officially recognized until 1952 and now draws 20,000-50,000 tourists to the small town of Buñol.
