La Tomatina Buñol was declared in 2002
Festival of International Tourist Interest.
The festival starts at about 10 a.m. The
first event is the climbing of a greased pole to
reach a ham hanging on the top.
Once someone has managed to drop the
ham off the pole, the signal is given for the
start of the tomato fight (the main event)
which usually starts at about 11 a.m.
Six trucks are responsible for distributing
the nearly 150 tons of tomatoes among
participants. The vehicles move at a very slow
pace among the crowd while a group of local
residents, from the top of the truck dumps are
responsible for distributing tomatoes among
people by throwing them. One of the highlights
of the festival occurs when the truck dumps
rise, pouring lots of tomatoes and juice on the
streets and over the people.
