Tom and Jerry were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for MGM Cartoons between 1940-1958, producing 114 shorts until MGM closed their animation studio. Gene Deitch took over from 1961-1962 but his versions were considered the worst. Chuck Jones directed from 1963-1967, producing 34 more episodes and changing the characters' appearances. Hanna and Barbera reunited from 1975-1977 for 48 additional episodes where Tom and Jerry became nonviolent friends due to new broadcasting rules.
