Time Travel at Bonnet House - Teacher's Guide
1. The worksheet, Time Travel at Bonnet House, has been designed to help reinforce the information
students learn after their field trip to the museum. The discussions led by the tour guides about the
objects below hit benchmarks recommended by the Florida Department of Education in the study of social
studies and visual arts. The worksheet can be used as a homework assignment or as a memento of their
day at Bonnet House. Below are some questions and information that could be shared in the classroom:
The Bartlett’s House
The Radio in the Studio
The Stove in the Kitchen
The Music Room Floor
Clay Bartlett’s Portrait
The Shell Collection
What does your home look like? How is it different than what was built 100
years ago? What did they use to build Bonnet House? Why? Were all homes the
same 100 years ago? How were they different? How are homes today similar
and different in Florida? In other parts of the USA? Around the world?
How do you listen to music? Is there a radio in your home? Do you listen to
music with friends and family or by yourself? People used to have radios before
TV. The entire family would gather together to listen to music, the news and
stories acted out by actors in a studio.
What does your kitchen look like? This stove used gas. What does your stove
use for energy? Have stoves always been used to cook food? What other things
have been used to cook food? What other kinds of appliances are used today to
cook food?
What do the floors in your home look like? Do you have rugs or carpets? What
materials are used? Why do you think this floor is painted? Why is it made from
concrete? Would you want a concrete floor at your house? Why or why not?
What design would you paint on it?
A portrait is a picture of a person or persons. It can be a painting, drawing or even
a photograph. What can you tell about Clay by looking at his portrait? Look at how
he dresses, what he is doing and where he is sitting. When you draw a portrait of
yourself, what do you include?
A collection is a group of things put together. The Bartletts had many different
collections: paintings, carvings, plates, orchids, and shells. What do you collect?
Do you show your collection to other people? Where are places you can go to
see other kinds of collections?
