2. WHAT IS A THRILLER?
• A thriller is a movie that had crime and mysterious plotting's. They are usually made to get
the viewers in suspense which makes their adrenaline rush. It makes the audience
unaware of what’s going to happen next which keeps them interested yet scared. There
are different types of thrillers such as psychological thrillers, horror thrillers, crime thrillers
etc.
• Thrillers and horrors are very closely linked together as they are similar.
3. TYPES OF THRILLERS?
• Crime thrillers – Silence of the lamb, the dark knight, etc.
• Romantic thrillers – Obsession, safe haven, etc.
• Psychological – Hide and seek, silence of the lamb, black swan, etc
• Supernatural thrillers – the exorcism, insidious, drag me to hell, etc.
• Action – The final destination, Bourne identity, etc.
4. MAIN THEMES OF A THRILLER?
• The main themes of thrillers can be the music that is used in the background which is
usually intimidating and goring music which sets the scenes.
• Usually the characters in the thriller were good people who turn's bad and scary later on
due to a bad experience they’ve experienced.
• The movie is very mysterious as we only find out the problem or who the person behind
the problem in the end towards the end
• It mainly teaches the audience a lesson at the end for us to take in. e.g. don’t walk under
a ladder as it brings you bad luck.
• It always has an antagonist (bad) and protagonist (good).
• The antagonist usually never speaks much which makes it more mysterious.
• Usually the story doesn’t make sense during the beginning which makes the audience
want know more. Thrillers are kind of guessing games.
5. KEY CHARACTERS
• Protagonist – the bad person. This person could be a psychopath, sociopath etc.
• Antagonist – the good person. This person is usually an innocent person who has
something bad happen to them which could be linked to their past.
• It usually has little children involved who can either be protagonist or antagonist.
• Women who have problems
• People with psychological problems like multi-personality disorder.
6. CODES AND CONVENTIONS
• Lighting – gloomy colours like black, dark green etc.
• Music (scary)
• Shadows
• Photographs
• Use of black and white
• Flashbacks
• Usually mirrors to show a reflection which is not a good reflection such as the inner soul
of the character which is a dark soul
