1. Minimum ventilation is important for broiler chickens in the first few weeks to guarantee fresh air, optimal growth, and organ development. It uses still air or very low air speeds to avoid chilling the chicks.
2. There are different ventilation systems used depending on the age of the chickens and outdoor temperatures, ranging from minimum ventilation for young chicks to tunnel ventilation for older birds to control heat.
3. Key factors for minimum ventilation systems include air exchange rate, pressure drop across inlets, and uniform air distribution without excess cooling of the chicks. This helps optimize health, growth and final performance of the flock.

4. Shadow Lands, Level 1 (Thirst): Hunted 2-13-15
It was a dark night. David was walking. He
was upset. He and his girlfriend had been in a fight.
A car came around a corner. It hit David and
sped away.
David lost a lot of blood. He was dying.
Lilly came. She was going to drink David’s blood.
Then she saw his face. He looked like her brother. Her
brother had died 200 years ago.
Lilly tried to save David. She gave him some of
her blood. Vampire blood can heal people.
It didn’t work. David died. But then he woke
up—as a vampire.

chapter 1
The War of 1812
The year was 1812.
There was a war. Two armies were
fighting. They were fighting on a big field.
One man shot another man with a gun.
The man who was shot fell to the ground.
“NO!” he said. His blood flowed. It made
the grass red.
The fighting went on and on. Many men
were killed. Many more were badly hurt.
A girl came. She wore a long dress. She
had long black hair and blue eyes. Her name
was Lilly.

Shadow Lands, Level 1 (Thirst): Hunted 2-13-15
Lilly was a vampire. She saw the man
who was shot. She saw his blood flowing.
She saw the red grass.
I’m so thirsty, she thought. I need to drink
blood.
Lilly was a new vampire. She didn’t
know how much to drink. She didn’t know
you could drink too much blood and kill
someone.
Lilly bent down. She put her arms around
the man. Lilly was very strong. She lifted
the man up so his neck was near her face.
Lilly’s face changed. Her eyes turned
from blue to red. Her teeth grew pointed
and sharp.
8. 3
Shadow Lands, Level 1 (Thirst): Hunted 2-13-15
Lilly bit into the man’s neck. She started
to drink his blood.
There was another man near Lilly. He
was on the ground, too. He was badly hurt.
His name was James Branch.
James Branch stared at Lilly. He saw her
red eyes. He saw her pointed teeth. He saw
her drinking blood from the man.
The man was his friend.
“What are you doing to my friend?” he
said to Lilly.
Lilly looked at him. She did not stop
drinking.
James Branch wanted to make Lilly stop.
But he was too weak. He could not get up.

Lilly finished drinking.
“That was good,” she said.
Lilly put the man down. Her face changed
again. She didn’t have pointed teeth. She
didn’t have red eyes.
Lilly walked away.
James Branch saw his friend die. He had
lost too much blood.
James Branch would never forget Lilly’s
face. He would never forget what she did
to his friend.
When I get better I will find her, he thought.
And when I find her, I will kill her.

Chapter 2
Hunted
It was 2015. Lilly and David were at West
Bend High School. They were in class. There
was a new teacher. His name was Mr. B.
Mr. B wrote on the board. He wrote:
The War of 1812
“I could teach this class,” Lilly told
David. “I know a lot about the War of 1812.
I was there.”
David said, “How can that be true?”
“I was a new vampire then,” said Lilly.
“So you are over 200 years old!” said David.
“I am,” said Lilly.
12. 7

“I could teach this class,”
Lilly told David.
13. 8
Shadow Lands, Level 1 (Thirst): Hunted 2-13-15
“It’s hard to be a new vampire,” said
David. “I know because I am one.”
“Yes. But you have me to help you!”
Lilly’s voice was loud. A girl named Ana
turned and stared. Ana looked mad.
Ana used to be David’s girlfriend. Then
they had a fight. They broke up.
David still liked Ana. But he was a
vampire now. He wanted to bite her neck.
Ana still liked David. But she didn’t
know he was a vampire. She didn’t know
why he was with Lilly all the time. It made
Ana mad.
Ana turned to her friend Tanya. “Mr. B
is so good-looking,” she said.
14. 9
Shadow Lands, Level 1 (Thirst): Hunted 2-13-15
“He really is,” Tanya said.
“I’m glad he’s our new teacher,” Ana
said.
David could hear the girls. He was mad.
Lilly knew David was mad. “Forget
Ana,” she said softly.
“I can’t,” David said.
Mr. B started to talk. “It’s time to start
class,” he said.
Mr. B wrote his phone number on the
board. “This is my phone number,” he said.
“You can text me if you have questions about
school work.”
Mr. B started to talk about the War of
1812.
15. 10
Shadow Lands, Level 1 (Thirst): Hunted 2-13-15
“There were fights in many places,” he
said. “There was even a fight here in West
Bend. It was on a big field.”
“Yes,” Lilly said. Her voice was sad.
Mr. B didn’t know who was talking. He
looked around. He saw Lilly. His eyes got big.
“Do I know you?” Mr. B asked Lilly.
“No,” Lilly said. “Why would you?” Her
voice was not nice when she said it.
Mr. B was mad. “See me after class,”
he said.
At the end of class, the bell rang. Students
got up to go. Lilly got up to go, too.
“Mr. B wants to see you,” said David.
“He might want to see me,” said Lilly.
16. 11
Shadow Lands, Level 1 (Thirst): Hunted 2-13-15
“But I don’t want to see him!”
Lilly walked out of class. David followed.
“Why are you acting this way?” he said.
“I don’t like Mr. B,” said Lilly. “I don’t
know why. There’s something about him . . .”
Then Lilly stopped talking. She could
hear a sound. It sounded like the wind.
Lilly jumped to the side. She moved
very fast.
Something flew by and stuck in the wall.
It was long and sharp. It just missed Lilly!
“It’s a stake!” said Lilly.

Chapter 3
Kill or Be Killed
David pulled the stake out of the wall.
It had a very sharp point.
“Look at this. It could have killed you!”
said David.
“I know,” said Lilly. “It just missed me!”
David was very upset. “What’s going
on, Lilly?” he asked.
Lilly said, “We’re being hunted.”
“By who?” David asked.
“A vampire hunter,” said Lilly.
“A vampire hunter!” David said. “Why
would a vampire hunter hunt us?”

said David.

“Why do you think? It’s because we’re
vampires!” Lilly said.
“I know, but we don’t kill people!” said
David. “We just drink their blood. Then we
let them go.”
“You don’t kill people,” said Lilly. “But
I do. I mean, I did.”
“I know,” said David. “You told me. You
were a new vampire. You didn’t know how
much blood to drink.”
“That’s right,” said Lilly. “There was no
one to teach me. I drank too much blood. I
killed a few people.”
“I’m glad you are here to teach me,” said
David. “I don’t want to kill people.”
20. 15
Shadow Lands, Level 1 (Thirst): Hunted 2-13-15
“I know,” said Lilly. “But now we have
a big problem. We’re being hunted.”
Lilly pointed at the stake. “Look at
this. It’s made of wood. It’s made to kill a
vampire.”
David looked scared.
“We need to find the hunter’s kit,” said
Lilly.
“What’s a hunter’s kit?” David asked.
“It’s a kit that has things in it for killing
vampires,” Lilly said. “Every hunter has one.”
“How can we find it?”
“I don’t know,” said Lilly. “But we have
to find the kit before the hunter uses it! And
then we have to kill him.”
21. 16
Shadow Lands, Level 1 (Thirst): Hunted 2-13-15
“KILL HIM?” David said.
“Yes,” Lilly said. “In our world, it’s kill
or be killed.”
“I can’t kill,” David said.
“Yes you can,” said Lilly. She put the
stake in her backpack.
“I won’t kill,” said David.
“You will if a vampire hunter is about
to kill you,” said Lilly.
“I hate being a vampire,” David said.
Lilly laughed. “Get used to it,” she said.
