TF Raven Medic Treats Local Citizen
By: SGT. Blayden Wall
October 14, 2005
E co medic attends to a local
Last week a local citizen walked into the Holy Angel Convent seeking medical attention. The
citizen was putting together a wheelbarrow when a piece swung loose and caused a deep
laceration to his leg. SPC Athena M Higham, a medic with E Company of TF Raven, cleaned the
laceration and controlled the bleeding with a pressure dressing.
When asked about the situation, SPC Higham said she was able to talk to the citizen while
she treated him. She said the citizen had been previously contacted by patrols from E Company
and advised that if he needed anything, he could reach them at the Holy Angel Convent. SPC
Higham said the citizen told her, “The first thing I thought of [after cutting myself] was you
guys.”
SPC Higham, who has been a medic for six years, said it is still difficult for local citizens to get
urgent medical attention. She said the citizen would have had to seek medical help at a hospital
and she did not know if he had transportation or knowledge of where to go. She feels that a lot of
people were intimidated by the military, and it is good that people are asking for help now.
Currently SPC Higham is in the process of enrolling at Clark College in Vancouver,
Washington to take a required class for enrollment into a paramedic program. She intends to
continue a career in emergency services where she can help people when working both in and out
of her military uniform.
Commander’s Corner
Task Force Raven: We’re about halfway through this mission. As hard as it is to believe, I find myself getting
used to the devastation. I’m not shocked anymore. We must all fight against dropping our guard or taking things
for granted. This is one of the most significant missions of our careers. Let’s all keep our heads in the game.
Remember:
1. Wear your Kevlar in military vehicles.
2. Leave the critters alone.
3. Hydrate.
4. Use good weapons procedures.
5. Be aware of your surroundings.
6. Use common sense.
The game is won in the third and fourth quarter. You have all worked and sacrificed to achieve the tremendous
success we have seen so far. Don’t let down! Be safe, take care of each other, and let’s finish strong.
You’re doing a great job, TF Raven. Keep up the good work.

Spotlight on Alpha Company
By SPC Angela Shepard
Last week was the beginning of “Operation Look and Leave,” and Alpha Company, Task Force
Raven, was prepared for any possible scenario that might play out. Fortunately, returning
residents were more than happy to see a military presence in their neighborhoods.
The Alpha soldiers made frequent stops to help residents secure belongings for the move back
to wherever the evacuation had taken them. At one point during the first day of Look and Leave,
a van pulled over and the soldiers were given a kitten which had been found in the dumpster;
they took it back to their Forward Operating Base at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts
Institute and cooled it off with water until an Animal Rescue team arrived.
Later, two women asked the soldiers to search a house to look for their friend’s father, who has
been missing since the hurricane. The soldiers readily complied but found no one in the house.
When not on patrol, Alpha Company soldiers are still hard at work. Each soldier spends one
hour a day doing “barracks maintenance”—fixing the damage to the creative arts school they
now call home. Another hour each day is spent “hand shaking and baby kissing”—meeting the
residents in their Area of Operations (Police District Five) and letting them know that the
military presence is here solely to keep the neighborhoods safe and well.
During a walking patrol through one neighborhood, the Alpha soldiers greeted a smiling
couple who were beginning to clean out their home of mold-covered belongings. When the
soldiers asked if the cou-
Alpha helps citizens retrieve belongings
ple needed anything, the response was smile-filled and hopeful: “We’ll be all right. We’ll get back
to where we were.”

Task Force Raven has done an exceptional job of completing all missions assigned. We have
heard only good things come from the daily meeting held at Brigade. The people of New Orleans
have only spoken of positive interactions with the Washington National Guard. Task Force
Raven has the largest Task Force currently operating in New Orleans with 581 dedicated
soldiers.
Each Company has adapted well to their Forward Operating Base living and made a positive
impression in the different communities. It amazes me what soldiers can do in a short time. The
S sections, PAO and Medics are working non-stop to assist the line units. The VIPs have seen
and tasted the FOB life of each company and greatly appreciate what you do each day on this
very important mission.
Thanks for your flexibility and your positive attitude.

Delta Dawgs on Patrol
By SPC Angela Shepard
Task Force Raven’s mission in Louisiana is to help the people of New Orleans by
working alongside local police and fire fighters in accordance with Mayor Nagin’s plan for
reconstruction. TF Raven’s Delta Company is exemplary of that plan in action.
Situated in Police District 7, the largest district in New Orleans, and operating out of NASA’s
Michoud assembly center, Delta Company works with the local police and fire departments on a
daily basis. Each shift begins and ends at the Crystal Palace Reception Hall, which has become
the New Orleans Police Department’s makeshift police station. There the soldiers meet up with
the police officers who will accompany the patrol in their squad car, then the police and soldier
patrol drives throughout local neighborhoods, responding to 911 calls and keeping an eye out for
looters.
Delta Company also rotates two-man teams through shifts with the fire department. These
soldiers ride along on fire calls, providing protection to the unarmed fire fighters who can then
concentrate on doing their jobs helping the people who need it.
Thirty Delta Company soldiers have recently been moved from their company to work on QRF
(Quick Reactionary Force), located at Echo Company’s Forward Operating Base, in anticipation
of the Look and Leave mission in the Lower 9th
Ward which started on Wednesday.
While Delta soldiers feel great pride for what they do on duty (scare looters out of homes, put
out car fires, check local businesses for secured entrances), many of the soldiers wish that they
could do more. Since TF Raven is an all-volunteer force, the overall desire of the soldiers is to
work as often and as productively as possible. When these feelings are expressed to local
residents, the residents are vehement in making the soldiers understand that their mere
presence, having boots on ground, is helping to make New Orleans safe so that returning
residents can return to the damaged city that is still their home.

Honor. It’s a word and an action that the Army values. The word means to hold someone in
high esteem or to respect them regardless of who they are.
Has this ever happened to you? Someone comes up to you and automatically you label
them “loser”. Maybe it’s because of their rank, their looks, their speaking ability or some
other external quality. If you have you have failed the honor test.
There is a powerful relationship between honoring others and how well we like
ourselves. Norman Vincent Peale, a well known preacher years ago, said, “Take a good look
at yourself in a mirror. Is there a good person looking back at you? How do you feel about
you? Do you have a clear conscience? Are you comfortable in your own skin? If not there is
something you can do.
“Fix one word in your mind: Others. Always be mindful of them. How much you
respect and honor others in your thoughts and deeds is directly related to how much you
respect yourself. It is impossible to reach out to another in need and then not feel great.”
There are many we see on patrol or in our section that we are tempted to label. God
calls us to honor others no matter who it is. Want to feel great about yourself? Honor or
respect those around you.
