This thesis examines the economic crisis in Portugal from an anthropological perspective, focusing on narratives around the crisis in Porto. The author conducted 3 months of ethnographic fieldwork in Porto, Portugal, using participant observation and interviews to understand how locals view and describe the crisis. The thesis aims to determine if the crisis can be seen as a period of cultural change by analyzing crisis narratives and their relationship to Portugal's history and current changes in Porto. It uses theories on cultural change, disasters, and modernity to frame the analysis. The empirical chapters explore how the crisis is discussed, how it relates to Portugal's past, and how Porto is changing in its aftermath.
