Over 9,200 photos were submitted to the 2014 National Geographic Photo Contest from over 150 countries. The grand prize winner was Brian Yen of Hong Kong for his photo "A Node Glows in the Dark" showing a woman illuminated by her phone on a crowded train. The winners were judged on creativity and quality, with the grand prize receiving $10,000 and a trip to National Geographic headquarters. First place winners in each category of people, places, and nature received $2,500 and had their photo published in National Geographic magazine.
