William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English poet and playwright considered the greatest writer in the English language. He wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and several other poems between 1589-1613. His plays have been translated into every major language and are performed more than any other playwright. The passage from Shakespeare's As You Like It describes the seven stages of a man's life: infant, whining schoolboy, lover, soldier, justice, pantaloon, and second childishness in old age. It depicts how people enter and exit life's stage, playing many roles throughout the seven ages.
