The document discusses how venture capital, web 2.0 technologies, mobile phones, and informal markets are transforming entrepreneurship in Africa. It outlines how venture capital investments are growing in sectors like energy, agriculture, and telecom due to economic reforms and a growing middle class. Mobile phone adoption is widespread at 34% penetration and driving new payment systems and commodity exchanges. Web 2.0 sites and blogging are giving Africans a voice while informal markets demonstrate ingenuity through homemade products in the absence of large retailers. The author advocates for recognizing the purchasing power of informal markets and argues mesocapitalism could help small businesses access capital.

The document discusses factors that influence potato production, including:
- The potato plant's main parts: haulm, tubers, and roots. Tubers are used for consumption and reproduction.
- Environmental factors like temperature, day length, and nitrogen levels can affect the balance between haulm and tuber growth. These influence whether potatoes have a short or long growing cycle.
- Proper seed selection and growing conditions are needed to produce a vigorous crop that utilizes the full growing period available. Both haulm and tuber growth must be balanced to maximize yield.
1) The document provides tips for staying positive in a tough work environment, including dealing with negative coworkers, constant change, and past experiences.
2) It recommends developing a positive attitude by taking responsibility for yourself, controlling your thinking, and changing reactive behaviors.
3) The tips include focusing on the good, spreading positivity through compliments and smiles, and evaluating your own behavior rather than blaming external factors.
The document tells a story about Perry the peacock who joins the Land of Penguins. While the penguins initially appreciate Perry's new ideas and creativity, over time they become uncomfortable with how different he is. Perry is loud, colorful, and has many new ideas that disrupt the penguins' preference for uniformity. As the penguins try to force Perry to conform, both parties become unhappy. The story is an allegory for how organizations often appreciate new ideas at first but later try to stifle creativity to maintain the status quo. Diversity can exist if organizations accept differences and appreciate each other rather than forcing conformity.
This document retells the classic story of the tortoise and the hare with additional lessons. It describes how the hare initially loses the race by becoming overconfident and sleeping. Later, the hare wins by running consistently fast. However, the tortoise then changes the competition terms to a race across a river, which he wins by swimming. Finally, the animals realize teamwork is best and cross the finish line together. The story teaches that being fast and consistent, playing to one's strengths, teamwork, perseverance and competing against a situation rather than a rival are keys to success.
By flying in a "V" formation, geese increase their flight efficiency by 71% compared to flying alone. The document outlines five lessons that can be learned from how geese fly together: 1) Working as a team gets the group to their destination quicker, 2) It is easier to fly when staying united with those going in the same direction, 3) Leadership is shared which requires mutual respect, 4) Encouragement from others increases progress, and 5) Geese support injured or sick members of the flock until they can fly again.
The professor holds up a glass of water in class and asks students to guess its weight. After various guesses, he asks what would happen if he held it up for longer periods of time - minutes, hours, days. While the weight would not change, his arm would become sore and numb. He asks what he should do to relieve the pain, to which a student replies "put the glass down." The professor explains that life's problems are like holding the glass - they cause stress and paralysis if dwelled on for too long. It is important to 'put the problems down' at the end of each day to wake up fresh and able to handle challenges again the next day.
This document contains 18 lessons on leadership from General Colin Powell. Some of the key points covered in the lessons include: being responsible means making difficult decisions that will upset some people; leaders must be accessible and address their employees' challenges; leaders should not be afraid to challenge experts or conform to stereotypes; and effective leadership relies on attracting talented people and keeping things simple.
The story describes a lazy lion who takes credit for the work of smaller animals. A fox and wolf come to the lion with broken items, a watch and TV, skeptical he can fix them. The lion disappears and returns the items repaired. It's revealed the lion's cave contains rabbits doing intricate work. Though unworthy, the lion receives credit due to the skills of his subordinates. A second story shows a hardworking rabbit writing a seemingly absurd thesis on rabbits eating predators. When challenged, he takes doubters into his burrow where a lion does the real work, showing it's one's supervisor that matters most, not the quality of one's own work.
1. The first lesson is about showing kindness and attention to all people, even if just with a smile and greeting, from an experience where a student learned the name of a cleaning woman after being quizzed on it.
2. The second lesson is about selflessly helping others, even in difficult circumstances, as shown through a story where a man helped an African American woman stranded in the rain and she later gave him a gift in thanks.
3. The third lesson is about always remembering to appreciate those who serve you, as shown through a story of a boy leaving extra tips for a waitress after not having enough money for an ice cream sundae.
The document provides three corporate lessons through short stories with morals. The lessons are:
1) To be idle you need a high position away from danger, like the crow sitting in a tree away from the fox.
2) Temporary shortcuts like eating dung may get you ahead but won't sustain you, as the turkey who ate dung to reach the top of the tree was then shot down.
3) Be wary of those who help or harm you, as the bird was saved but then eaten by the cat who dug it out of cow dung where it was warming.
An old lady visits the president of the Bank of Canada to open a savings account with $165,000. When the president asks how she earned the money, the lady explains that she made bets, including offering $25,000 that the president's testicles are square. The president accepts the bet. That night, he anxiously examines his testicles to ensure they are not square. The next day, the lady and her lawyer come to collect, and the president agrees to drop his pants so they can inspect. It is then revealed that the lady bet her lawyer $100,000 that she would be holding the president's testicles that morning.
Each day is a new page in the book of our life that we can fill with beautiful memories or regretful moments, depending on how we choose to live it. We should treat each day as precious since we don't know when our last day may be. By making peace with others, enjoying life's simple pleasures, and helping those around us, we can fill our days and our life story with happiness and joy.
1) The document discusses how attitude is like an iceberg, with only 10% of one's attitudes being visible while 90% remain below the surface, unknown to others.
2) It emphasizes that attitude makes up a large part of who we are and greatly impacts our lives and behaviors.
3) The document provides several quotes about the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and outlook.
The document uses the metaphor of a bank that credits your account each day with 86,400 seconds (representing the number of seconds in a day) to represent time. Each night any unused time is written off and lost, with no ability to carry over time to the next day. It encourages making the most of each present day and moment, as time passes quickly and is not recoverable. Friends are compared to rare jewels that support and encourage each other.
