A recent CBC/Radio-Canada article highlighted the efforts of the museum’s senior paintings
conservator in taking away centuries of grime on Rembrandt paintings prior to a major exhibition.
The process takes hours of painstaking labor with a large Q-tip and a mixture of water and a small
amount of a soap-like solution.

With single paintings often requiring 40 to 80 hours of restoration work, aspects of the canvas such
as a signature or the artist’s original colors and intentions are often revealed. The process is an
intimate one, with the restorer seeking to take away just the right level of residue buildup to
showcase how the artist would have wanted the piece to be seen.

The solution used was described by the restorer as an upgrade from saliva, which was a choice
early in her career for its excellent mild cleaning properties, associated with small amounts of salt.
