KISPE Space Open Source Satellite Programme

Paper Abstract: We have initiated the development of a flexible, fully Open Source, microsatellite platform, embracing an open source approach, to create an efficient fail-safe satellite that is performant, capable, modular and robust. The platform can be readily tailored for different missions, can be upgraded and configured after launch and can operate with multiple ground station networks. The platform is being developed using COTS parts, processes and tools, and the design will be made available to the small satellite community. We are taking a holistic approach to capturing and satisfying the diverse technical and programmatic needs of different stakeholders and are targeting high performance at a cubesat price; the key target characteristics for the LEO variant of the Open Source Satellite Platform being: launch mass 25kg to 250kg; >70% payload mass fraction; payload volume up to 600x600x450mm; payload power 10W to 1kW; 3-axis stabilised; adaptable pointing knowledge, control and agility; orbit 400km to 850km; 5-7 year lifetime; <14 month recurrent schedule. We are targeting recurrent prices of USD1m for a 50kg variant, GBP1m for a 100kg variant, when manufacturing single or low quantities of satellites

Adopting containers at scale is fundamentally a cultural change. In late 2015, PayPal decided to migrate en masse to containers for applications built on many different frameworks over the last 15 years. It was a bold and strategic plan that included how to showcase value of containers to leadership, a phased execution strategy, building the right team to lead, and cultural transformation. Changing application code, deployment methods, and operational tools were at onset non-negotiable. This session will share how the plan was pitched and the learnings that unfolded as PayPal carefully changed everything - and nothing at the same time - to get to 150,000 containers running in production in 2 years.

Using Open Source and Open Standards in the Platform game

Software platforms are a particular case of two-sided markets, where growing the 2 sides of the market at the same time is quite hard, but once established, the network effects accruing to the platform provider provide a solid moat to grow a robust business. After the meteoric rise the Windows Platform using a proprietary development model in the 90's, in the past 20 years, Open Source and Open Standards proved to be very useful strategic options in the platform game. In this talk I will share my personal experiences in this area about the use of open source and open standards in platforms I have helped create or grow: Sun Portal Server, Google Adwords, OpenSocial, HTML5, Google App Engine, Cloud Foundry, Microsoft Azure, and Docker. I will also cover platforms I have studied, and try to extract some useful lessons and principles that I hope can be useful to other practitioners.

The success of unicorn businesses such as Uber and AirBnB that continue to disrupt traditional established markets is proof that business platforms are here to stay! Presentation at Information Access in Smart Cities workshop in Amsterdam, 13/04/2014 - on how smart citizens should be the focus in smart cities, and what CitySDK does to make it possible. The presentation starts with some design rules for smarter cities, then introduces Waag Society, and quickly moves on to the Amsterdam Case for Open Data. Then the shortcomings of this approach are described, after which it introduces the City Service Development Kit - a set of bottom up, harmonized API's for software development that scales across cities and countries. Some examples are presented, and it gets back to the central thesis: design smart cities with the people, not for or against them.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM). Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
