Translation:
Summertime is rather hot. Many people aren’t accustomed to appearing with face masks on. A
part of the populace, despite the ongoing presence of COVID-19, remove the face masks. On
August 20th, the New York Times published a study based on daily and randomly selected
samples, each consisting of hundreds of persons, in fourteen (14) different areas
(https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/20/nyregion/nyc-face-masks.html#link-4c3818f7). It
observed, quantified, and compared the numbers of mask wearers in each location. The result:
Flushing, a gathering point for Chinese people, has performed the best. On one street, upwards to
ninety-nine percent (99%) of people had facemasks on.
On the 20th, the New York Times published a statistical analysis by Dr. Melody S. Goodman
(https://publichealth.nyu.edu/faculty/melody-goodman), associate dean for research and
associate professor of biostatistics at New York University School of Global Public Health,
which indicated the proportional breakdown of mask wearers in each area.
These samples come from a study of seven thousand five hundred forty-five (7,545) people on
the streets of thirteen (13) different locations and a boardwalk. They underwent random sampling
from July 27th to 30th, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with temperatures averaging from eighty-six (86) to
ninety-seven (97) degrees Fahrenheit. On a given street at each of the aforementioned fourteen
(14) locations, there was statistical sampling of three hundred forty (340) to five hundred sixty-
seven (567) people about mask wearing conditions.
The numerical results show that Queens borough’s Flushing has the best performance. On Main
Street, where there was a random sampling of five hundred (500) people, the female mask
wearing rate was one hundred percent (100%). The male mask wearing rate reached ninety-eight
percent (98%). Only four percent (4%) of people did not cover their faces with masks.
Dr. Goodman said that in neighborhoods with mostly Asian immigrants, the numbers of mask
wearers were greater than those in other neighborhoods. According to the statistical data,
downtown Flushing’s residents are over seventy percent (70%) Asian--mostly Chinese. “From a
cultural perspective, before the pandemic an American like myself did not wear a mask. But
what’s interesting is that before the facemask order, I saw many Asian people wearing
facemasks.”
At the commercial intersection on Seventh Avenue and Union Street in Brooklyn’s Park Slope,
the numbers of mask wearers this time amounted to a second-place high. Ninety-eight percent
(98%) of women and ninety-five percent (95%) of men wore face masks. On average, the mask
wearing rate reached ninety-seven (97%). Although a part of the populace did not wear face
masks, people waiting in line to buy food at the commercial intersection received constant
reminders about respecting social distancing.
In the middle of this research, Rockaway Beach’s performance is the worst. On the boardwalk
and the beach near 116th Street, the mask-wearing rate was only twenty percent (20%). Some
twenty-four percent (24%) of women and sixteen percent (16%) of men wear face masks.
Cristian, a nineteen-year-old young person, and three friends went to the beach. Only one of the
four wore a mask. “My facemask is in my bag. Honestly, I’m too tired to find it.”
Aside from this, mask wearing rates in Harlem, Brownsville, Far Rockaway, and St. George in
Staten Island are lower on average: merely sixty-two percent (62%) to sixty-six percent (66%),
give or take.
This report also indicates that men are twice less likely than women to wear masks. Experts
attribute this disparity to “toxic masculinity.”
