The Magic Lantern provides film education, media literacy, and creative opportunities for children ages 5 to 12, especially those who are deprived. They use films, live discussion, and stage shows to communicate difficult concepts memorably. Beyond shows, they offer online learning about film and creativity challenges. Founded in 1992 in Switzerland, The Magic Lantern now has over 30,000 members across 4 continents, funded partially by subscriptions and public support. The UK branch started in 2006 but ceased in 2009 due to new health and safety rules, and is now trying to restart with relaxed regulations by finding a venue and sponsor.

2. Our purpose is to provide film education media literacy creative inspiration active participation & career development - for children aged 5 to 12, especially if deprived in any way

3. Our aim is to Make up for a gap in primary education Get children ready to enjoy a key aspect of our culture, while Teaching them how to resist manipulation and giving them new wider career horizons

4. Our methods are unique: We use written words, a live conversation in educational mode; & a scripted stage show … with a structured selection of films to communicate difficult concepts to small children – memorably!

5. … and then, beyond our shows we offer interactive on-line facilities to learn about film; provide information in a child-safe online environment and challenge children to engage in creativity: to draw, write, act direct and animate ->

6. The Magic Lantern family: Founded 1992 in Neuchatel; 2000: established all over Switzerland; now international – on 4 continents, with over 30,000 members. Mother-house plus self supporting clubs funded 20-25% by subscriptions + public support (international, national, local)
