Hurricane Camille formed over the Caribbean Sea in August 1969 and strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane as it approached the coast of Mississippi, causing catastrophic damage and flooding along the coast. Officials warned residents of the Gulf Coast to evacuate and prepare for the powerful storm, though the damage was still immense. Camille remains one of the costliest and deadliest hurricanes to strike the United States.
