Projects that will put Formula 1 technology into buses and excavators, research new manufacturing
technologies for electric motors and develop the next generation of engines are part of a ten-year,
£1 billion joint investment by industry and government through the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC).
The APC is the central pillar of the 2013
Automotive Industrial Strategy to create and
safeguard more than 30,000 jobs in automotive
manufacturing and supply chain companies
delivering economic and environmental
benefits across the UK.
Last year in the UK 10,000 new jobs were created
in the motor industry and more than £2.5 billion
was invested in R&D and manufacturing with
1.6 million vehicles and 2.5 million engines
produced. This resurgence in the automotive
sector is spread right across the UK with
potential for companies to seize the emerging
opportunities around low carbon vehicles.
TheAPC’sactivityisguidedbythejointindustry
and government Automotive Council which
identified key areas of low carbon propulsion
technology where the UK can grow its R&D and
production capability.
In the last 12 months the APC has invested
£180 million in six collaborative projects which
involve SMEs, suppliers, vehicle manufacturers
and universities across the UK, with future
projects to be announced shortly.
The APC invests in projects through twice-
yearly funding competitions, typically with up
to £100 million available each year. The latest
competition received applications for projects
worth £273 million.
Business Secretary Dr Vince Cable and Co-
Chair of the Automotive Council, which created
the APC, said:
‘Green technology will drive the cars of the future
and UK designers and manufacturers must
continue to be leading innovators in this field.
That’s why we’ve collaborated with industry
to provide £1billion joint investment in the
Advanced Propulsion Centre - one of the driving
forces behind our automotive industrial strategy.
The APC will be the hub for projects as diverse
as using motorsport energy recovery systems
in buses, and streamlining the production of
electric motors. It’s these kind of initiatives that
will enable our automotive sector to raise the bar
in innovation, give businesses the confidence to
invest and create high skilled jobs.’
The APC helping a company near you
The UK is a Propulsion Nation with the
automotive industry spread across a large
geographic footprint. Academic institutions,
designers, suppliers and producers are not

a spread of opportunity, and the structure of
the APC reflects this.
The APC’s Hub is based in the University
of Warwick and is connected to a growing
number of Spoke locations throughout the UK
providing access to technical and industrial
expertise in key areas of technology.
THE APC – CLEANER VEHICLES AND
GREATER PROSPERITY FOR THE UK
The APC provides an
unprecedented opportunity
for the UK automotive industry
as it develops technologies of
the future. I would urge you
to encourage organisations
in your constituencies to get
in touch with the APC and see
how we can help them, as
together we work to make the
UK a global centre of excellence
for low carbon propulsion
technology.

By 2040 almost none of Europe’s new vehicles
will be powered by diesel or petrol alone.
The UK is now seizing this once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to meet the demand for new
propulsion technology.
