 A former behavior counselor and in-school suspension
teacher, Patrick Van Amburgh received his bachelor of
science degree from Springfield College, where he played
one year of collegiate football. Patrick Van Amburgh
continues to exhibit his love for sports by playing flag
football in the fall, winter, and spring.
The first noted game of college football took place on Nov.
6, 1869 between Princeton and Rutgers. Not long after,
both touch and flag football were developed as non-
contact versions of the popular sport. In the 1940s, flag
football was popularized as a recreational sport by
members of the United States Army stationed on military
bases.

3. Flag Football
 Recreational leagues were formed following the end of
World War II and the game spread throughout college
campuses nationwide during the 1960s and 1970s, although
the game played then was a seven-man contact variation of
the sport.
Today, the sport's governing body, the United States Touch
Football League, holds annual national championship
tournaments in Florida. It hosted the 46th annual
tournament in Plant City from January 13-15 and crowned
national champions in men's, women's, youth, and co-ed
variations of the sport.
