Africa faces a serious health crisis, with malaria infecting 247 million people in 2008 and killing nearly 1 million, mostly African children, with a child dying of malaria every 45 seconds. Malaria accounts for 20% of childhood deaths in Africa. Better healthcare, including treatment and prevention of malaria, is urgently needed to stem the tide of child deaths from this disease on the continent.
