The village became ghostly after a ship ran aground near the shore, spilling its petrol cargo into the sea. The petrol spill destroyed sea life and made fishing impossible for a time. Most of the village men left to find work elsewhere, only occasionally returning to see their families. At night just a few lights remained in the now near-empty village. It took years for the village to recover as the petrol's effects lessened and some of those who had left returned, bringing hope but also fear of a repeat incident.
