Professional show jumping, an Olympic sport for more than
a century, involves riders commanding a horse over a field
of various obstacles. One of the most common show
jumping obstacles is the oxer, alternatively known as the
spread. The oxer features two vertical bars placed close
together, requiring the rider and horse to make a longer
jump than would be posed by a traditional single-bar
spread.

square oxer features two vertical poles of
equal height. The ascending oxer features
one vertical followed by a slightly elevated
pole, while the descending oxer, as the
name implies, sees the second vertical at a
lower level than the first. Finally, the Swedish
oxer is created by two verticals positioned
diagonally so that they create an X.
