THE DEVELOPMENT OF OPAL
The opal jewelryis a truly unique stone. So unique that there is no resemblance to the
scattering of completely different colors from one stone to another. Most pieces of opal ring
come directly from Australia. The first excavation of the White Cliff Mine began in the late
1800s. Other notable Australian mines excavated later were Andamuka, Lightning Ridge and
Kuber Paddy. More recently, deposits have been discovered in Central and South America,
but Australia is still the most significant supplier. These gems are known for their delicate
nature. This is because of their chemical make-up. The stone in a (opal ring) is sedimentary.
As it passes through the water filled with silicate, it accumulates silicate and from there the
gems grow into river beds and cave grooves and canals. The spheres of silicate cause the
glorious isolation of light in each stone. However, water makes it so subtle. These jewelry-
grade gems contain 6 to 10% water while others can contain up to 20%. This makes them
extremely soft.
As mentioned above, the stone in an (opal bracelet) is very delicate so care should be taken
while wearing it. On the Mohs scale, these stones average 6 which means they chip, scratch
and break very easily. Instead of wetting, because it will absorb liquid, simply wipe the
stones with a soft wet cloth. For preservation, protect them from hard rocks and make sure
they have enough moisture in the air so they don’t dry out. There are stones that show a bold
burning color like the black variety made of igneous ash. Others are as calm and quiet as
whites. Some varieties were created using opal layers and another clear stone to create a
more dramatic play of texture and light. Still some gems are removed with their host rock as
some background. These are kept in unequal shape for unique pieces of jewelry.(Opal
Birthstone) Celebrates the month of October. It commemorates the 14th wedding
anniversary. Due to its unique and delicate qualities, this gem also creates a wonderful
family legacy. A wedding gift goes from mother to daughter, as a sweet sixteen gift or simply
as a gift from an estate. If taken care of properly, this jewelry can last for ages and be
enjoyed by generations.
