TEN
COMMANDMENTS
Read CFC pages 209-213
#1
• What is the significance of the
10 Commandments in your life
today?
#2
•How does the 10
commandments help you
become a better version of
yourself?
#3
• What are some difficulties
in keeping the
commandments?
#4
•Is the fundamental moral
law (10 commandments)
universal?
(Yes or No) and Why?
Universality of the Commandments
• The fundamental moral law
explicitly revealed by God in
the ten commandments is
universal to all peoples,
regardless of an individual’s
profession of faith.
• The law is as relevant to the Jew,
Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Hindu…
as it is to Pagan or Atheist who may
fail to accept or respect it….
WHY?
… Because the values
contained in it are natural
and inherent in all
mankind.
Love,
Respect for the dignity of man,
Love of truth,
Justice,
Peace,
Respect for property,
Family solidarity,
Respect for life,
Freedom,
Work
… are the truths which
unite men as rational
creatures who are
capable of seeking
proximate and ultimate
purposes in life, which
not in isolation from but
in harmony with others.
These are the
values which
bind man to
his creator as
well as to his
fellowman.
The Decalogue
“Ten Words” or “The Ten
Commandments”
• The gift of God Himself and His
holy will. In making His will
known, God reveals Himself to
His people.
• Prescribed love towards God and
taught justice towards neighbor.
• The way of life in which to enter into
friendship with God.
• Thus through the Decalogue, God
prepared human to become his
friend and to live in harmony with his
neighbor.
CFC, 925 The Basic Function of the Ten
Commandments
• The Ten Commandments set out
systematically what the love of God and love
of neighbor demand of us.
• The first three Commandments concern our
duties towards God, the last seven our duties
toward our neighbor.
CFC, 927 The Preamble of the Ten
Commandments
“I am the Lord your God who brought
you out of the land of Egypt, that
place of slavery.”
This sounds the proper note for all the
Commandments: they are truly
liberating!
The Ten Commandments
1. I am the Lord your God: you shall not have other gods
besides me.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.
4. Honor your father and mother.
5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

Ex. 20:17 | Deut. 5:21
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.
Ex. 20:17| Deut. 5:21
The 10 commandments are needed to provide:
1. credible and durable moral norms for
everyday life;
2. a pattern and structure for living
according to Christ’s commandment to
love God and neighbor; and
3. a universally accessible source for
relating to non-Christians in moral
matters.

THE DIGNITY OF MAN
• Man is capable of seeking and upholding the
truths and values contained in them.
• It is precisely because man’s last end is God
and because he bears likeness to God as a
spiritual being, and because he is able to know
and love God, that man derives his dignity.
By continually elevating his intellect to
God who is truth, and by fulfilling
the precepts contained in the moral
law through the exercise of his will,
man earns greater worth and
dignity. Every time man transgresses
the moral law, he not only offends God
and others, but he diminishes in
personal dignity.
Who is God?
If God were completely unknown, we could
not search for him. Had we not
somehow experienced his presence in
the stirrings and restlessness of our
hearts, we would not even yearn and
long for him.

IN THE DIFFERENT EVENTS OF
YOUR LIFE…
CAN YOU SEE GOD?
Gaudium et Spes, 41
“God is the ultimate goal of
human. Only God meets the
deepest longings of the human
heart, which is never fully
satisfied by what this world has
to offer.”
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they
shall see God."
Only human person has the
dignity and is created for
relationship – COMMITMENT,
RESPONSIBILITY AND FIDELITY
HOW IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?
• GOD IS A FAITHFUL GOD – HOW ABOUT YOU?
• GOD IS A COMMITTED GOD – HOW ABOUT
YOU?
OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS IS A
MANIFESTATION/EXPRESSION OF OUR
RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD…
• Despite the:
–rapid human progress
–enormous knowledge that persons
have
–vast advances in practically all areas of
human endeavor
–developments of science
“Our hearts are restless until they rest
in you.”
It means nothing can meet the
deepest longing of the
human heart except God, the
goal and meaning of human
existence.
What are the things or
concerns that disturb you?
“Let nothing disturb you,
God alone is enough!”
(St. Teresa of Avila)
• God = is the highest, most perfect, most
comprehensive, absolute good.
• John 15: 10-14
“If you keep my commandments you will live in
my love . . .
You are my friends if you do what I command
you.”
Attributes of God:
• Almighty = THE UNCREATED REALITY;
all-powerful
• All-knowing = knows everything
• All-loving = He is Love Himself
• Eternal = He lives eternally, source of Life,
the Master of life
• Immanent and
transcendent = most present
with His creation yet totally
beyond us
Foundation of moral life
•To freely accept the
sovereignty of God
•To live the demands of
God’s love
INTEGRATION:
The real desecration of the true
worship of God is the desecration
of his image in human beings.
God is worshipped when the
human person is respected and
loved.
•How does your knowledge
about loving God
concretely influence your
human relationships?
