The Carniolan bee is a subspecies of the western honey bee that originated in Slovenia. It was first described and introduced to other beekeepers in 1879. It is known for its gentle temperament and ability to adapt to cold winters and variable weather. The Carniolan bee is grey in color with short hair and stripes, and has anatomical adaptations like a long tongue for collecting nectar from clover. It was exported worldwide in the late 19th century due to its desirable traits and is now one of the most popular bee species. Slovenia protects the indigenous Carniolan bee and does not allow other species to be bred within the country.
