This document appears to be a presentation about Airbnb. It discusses Airbnb's global community that connects people to unique travel experiences. It provides data on the growth of Airbnb listings from 2009 to 2014. It also discusses the economic and environmental impacts of Airbnb, noting it contributes hundreds of millions of euros to various cities' economies and that Airbnb properties consume less energy and water than hotels. The presentation emphasizes Airbnb's goal of allowing people to feel like they can belong anywhere while traveling.
Plans Head of UX, Jason Mesut has also been doing his bit to quell the UX talent drought. His talk to UX newbies at General Assembly on what employers are looking for, has also been a hit online (view on Slideshare). On top of this, Jason has been working with some other leaders in the field to develop a course on digital Experience Design for Hyper Island.

A presentation I pulled together for General Assembly's UX Design Immersive course in London.
I pulled the presentation together in a morning from some old and emerging thinking. Hoping to progress soon, so any feedback greatly received.
This presentation shares the journey I’ve been on, from trying to shape and influence a user’s path, to creating sandbox environments in which people can play and amaze us!
______
Designers are trained to guide users toward predetermined outcomes, but is there a better use of this persuasive psychology? What happens if we focus less on influencing desired behaviors and focus more on designing ‘sandboxes’: open-ended, generative systems? And how might we go about designing these spaces? It’s still “psychology applied to design”, but in a much more challenging and rewarding way!
In this talk, I’ll share the journey I’ve been on, from trying to shape and influence a user’s path, to creating these sandbox environments. You’ll learn why systems such as Twitter, Pinterest, and Minecraft are so maddeningly addictive, and what principles we can use to create similar experiences. We’ll look at education and the work of Maria Montessori, who wrote extensively about how to create learning environments that encourage exploration and discovery. And we’ll look at game design, considering all the varieties of games, especially those carefully designed to encourage play — a marked contrast with progression games designed to move you through a series of ever-increasing challenges, each converging upon the same solution. Finally, we’ll look at web applications, and I’ll share how this thinking might influence your work, from how you respond to new feature requests to how you design for behavior change in a more mature way.
Creating a Patient-Centric Online ExperienceEffective
This nationwide hospital wanted to create a patient-centric interactive experience to aid in the cancer treatment decision process. Peyton Lindley from EffectiveUI and Matt Eaves discuss the way they applied a patient-centric design approach to better engage prospective patients, articulate key differentiators and bring the hospital experience to life.
As organizations continue to establish and mature their in-house design teams, it turns out there’s very little common wisdom on what makes for a successful design organization. Books and presentations tend to focus on process, methods, tools, and outcomes, leaving a gap of knowledge when it comes to organizational and operational matters.
In this talk, Kristin Skinner discusses how to coordinate efforts and structure teams within large organizations. She covers:
- Realizing the Potential of Design
- Organizational Models / The Centralized Partnership
- The 5 Stages of Design Organizations
- The 12 Qualities of Effective Design Organizations
She also stresses the impact that design can have on business and highlights the importance of design managers in coordinating in-house efforts, advocating for quality, and enabling culture.

Building the first UX team in a global business is very exciting. But handling the resultant demand for the team's multidisciplinary skill set is challenging. I quickly realised that you cannot scale a team by hiring only. I needed to think differently. I needed to use Design Thinking to explore how might we share my team's resources with our primary users, software developers. We re-envisioned how we share our design resources. This innovation leads to the creation of cutting edge technical solutions, enabling developers to access and use the design resources in their development environments. Learn how we at McKesson's global UX design labs team used this strategy to invigorate our workflow and scale.
Key Takes:
Design Thinking works, don't be afraid to use it on yourself and your team.
Make the most of your design resources such as Design Systems and UX Writing Style guides.
Bring design resource to the users environment.
Scale your UX Design team with design thinking.
Do-it-yourself toolkit to audit the user experience of your products and services.
We know that UX is too important for every business to be ignored.
But we recognize that not all businesses have a dedicated team or person in-house to do this, or have the budget to hire consultants.
This DIY toolkit provides a step-by-step guide for anyone to do a simple experience audit.
UX design is not a step in the process, it's in everything we do. More than anything it is a project philosophy, not just a set of tools, methods and deliverables.
In this presentation we explain how you can differentiate through design, why user experience design matters as well as share our knowledge around all the activities that helps ensure a great UX/UI design.
Developed a comprehensive UX writing roadmap, elucidating the value that UX writing brings and providing a clear blueprint for its successful execution

Capturing Contexts: A workshop with jobs-to-be-done tools / Service Experienc...Martin Jordan
Customers hire services and products to do a certain job. Once people spot a job in their life they start looking for a solution, an offering that helps them to get the job done. Which offering they eventually hire often depends on the circumstances in which the job occurs.
This workshop highlighted the importance of customers’ situations and contexts when creating new offerings. As circumstances are changing, people’s related needs and desired outcomes do too. Using the example of food-related services, the workshop at Service Experience Camp 2015 illustrated how all offerings fulfil the general need of feeding humans, but also which specific situations each service caters for.
The workshop was run by Andrej Balaz, Hannes Jentsch and Martin Jordan on November 14, 2015 at Service Experience Camp in Kalkscheune in Berlin-Mitte.
There are many reasons why someone might want to become a UI UX designer. One reason could be to create a better user experience for people using a product.
Another reason could be to improve the design of a website or app. A final reason could be to create new and innovative user interfaces.

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to NOT repeat it.
We know the old adage, but the other reality is that there's nothing new under the sun. The same goes for the practice of User Experience (UX) and it goes back further than you might think.
History can be fun – especially when we see how it relates to our ever-expanding and shifting industry of today. This presentation is geared to new practitioners who want to understand the foundations of our field and veterans who would like to see a different perspective on our profession. Let's look at the practice of UX through a historical lens at some of man's most creative pursuits and demonstrate the parallels between the past and today's design trends.
UI UX design and product design is a course that leads you to a good career. To be a good UI UX designer, a person needs to be creative and a good design thinker. UI UX design is a non code design career where you just need to do research and design a good perfect one.
You can even choose this as your career guide and project topic for computer science students.

- But Why is community so important for us?
If you think about our business: we only provide the platform but the hosts are the ones that make it unique and deliver the experience.
So if you enter the door of a stranger for the first time. This particular moment is something that the community provides. It’s not Brian or me opening the door.

Beginning of Airbnb not successful
Paul Graham “rather 100 that love you than 1m that like you”
Meet NYC community to learn and invest into the partnership
Airbnb started to make a difference
Like the Airbnb open we just held few months ago in Paris.
This is Chip Conley our Head of Global Hospitality speaking at our recent Airbnb Open last week.
5000+ hosts from over 110 countries came to the "Airbnb Open" convention in Paris.
You can see why we try to engage the community to deliver these kind of experience to guest.
Jenny + Cathrin
Jenny Community Ansprechpartner
Again community is one of our major drivers in growth.
Here you can see Jenny at one of our recent events in Berlin with one of our superhosts Katrin.
And we do these meet ups globally. We now have 20 offices around the globe, so we're incredibly local.
we organize meet ups all over the world to enable our community to get together and share their thoughts, ideas and even problems.
We need to know what our users want.
It is important to give your community the platform to meet each other.
So thats the big difference. We don't see an “us" and “them”.
Partners
A common mistake is to forget or abandon what made you successful. For us There is no Airbnb the company and Airbnb the community. There is just Airbnb. We are one community.
1st secret: make community love you
This is also best explained with an Example.
we talked about that B, J. & N. were not really successful until they were invited to participate in a start-up-programme at Y-Combinator where they met Paul Graham.
He told them: I’d rather make sure that 100 people love you than having a mio people kind of like you. Get to know your community!
The guys then decided to meet some members of the community in NYC and that’s when it started to make a difference.
In the beginning, when the Airbnb community was still tiny, our founders Brian and Joe would go to every single listing and take photos of the rooms themselves and to check the quality of the listings. We now have more advanced tools for this ;)
Immer mehr Menschen erkennen die Vorteile der Sharing Eco und Airbnb für sich
