Pepin the Hunchback was the eldest son of Charlemagne, born with a spinal deformity. Though initially in line to inherit part of the Frankish kingdom due to his age, Pepin's disability and possible illegitimacy meant he was an unlikely heir. In 780, Charlemagne formally disinherited Pepin and designated his third son Carloman as heir instead. In 792, Pepin joined a failed conspiracy against Charlemagne and his family led by discontented nobles. Charlemagne spared Pepin's life but sent him to a monastery for the rest of his days.
