The motor racing legend was wearing a camera on his helmet when he crashed in the French ski resort of Meribel last Sunday.
He was catapulted through the air before slamming into a rock, leaving him with serious brain injuries.
The revelations came as Grand Prix fans from around the world staged a silent tribute to mark his 45th birthday yesterday.
Many wore Ferrari caps and jackets, the team with which Schumacher won a record five titles in a row between 2000 and 2004.
It was a sombre and poignant occasion as scores of well-wishers of all ages massed in the drizzle of a bleak January day outside the Grenoble
University Hospital.
His family said they were "overwhelmed" byt he support of fans who had gathered at the hospital.

Inside, on the fifth floor, Schumacher’s wife Corinna continued her tragic vigil in the intensive care unit. She had been due to celebrate the day with her
husband of 18 years and their children Gina-Marie, 16, and Mick, 14, at their chalet in the resort.
Instead, the seven-times world champion remains critically ill in an induced coma. His helmet is said to have been broken in two by the impact and it is
unclear whether film of the accident remains undamaged.
Doctors confirmed that he was still critical but in a stable condition.

Portable cameras are increasingly popular with skiers. Some are built into goggles while others are mounted on the helmet. Local prosecutors, who are
investigating the accident, refused to comment on the claims.
A spokesman said: “The communication of the investigation’s results will be made first to the family.”
Looking tired and fragile, Corinna, 44, arrived at the hospital yesterday morning shortly before Schumacher’s former racing driver brother Ralf, 38.
