Austin is the capital of Texas and was chartered in 1839 when Texas was still the Republic of Texas. It became the state capital in 1846 when Texas joined the United States. Austin is now the fourth largest city in Texas and sixteenth most populous in the country. The Texas flag was adopted in 1839 as the flag of the Republic of Texas and features a blue field with a white star representing Texas as the Lone Star State.
