Over a 17 month period, 100 airline staff tested positive for drugs or alcohol in random tests conducted by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. A Qantas pilot attempted to fly under the influence of alcohol, which was discovered by other staff before takeoff and grounded the flight. The legal alcohol limit for pilots is 0.02%, but this pilot was suspected to have consumed more. While other staff also tested positive, pilots literally hold the lives of hundreds of passengers, so drinking before a flight risks lives and is shocking.
