Computer scientists Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner founded Cisco Systems after inventing a technology to connect buildings on the Stanford University campus that had disparate local area networks. They realized a multi-protocol router was needed to deal with different networking protocols. This was the beginning of Cisco Systems, which grew to have over 500 employees and $183 million in revenue by its first few years.
